I have a 1970 mercury cougar with a 351 Cleavland. I have power steering and power brakes. I tried to put my "flow tech" headers on , but the drivers side wont fit. This is because the power steering box and the pitman arm are in the way. Why would the book on headers say that it will fit my application and it doesn't ? The guy at the store said there is also this bracket that i need to ... do something with ... but i got no clue (maybe its to move the p.s. box, but this still doesn't fix the pitman arm infraction. Please help me ...

Call flow tech, or who ever you bought them from, maybe they are the wrong ones. If they are correct, send them back and try another brand. If you only need a little bit of room I would just "re-engineer" that header.

Well i took the headers back to the store and the part number is correct .. but who knows .. And as for "re-engineering" its like i couldn't just bump then a bit to fit .. i would have to collapse the entire tube . Its off by about 2inches . I will order maybe some hookers or headmen if i have too , but there a fair bit more price wise.

sorry to hear that. had the same problem with hookers. you just do not know until you try to bolt them up. Had to beat up my ceramic coated headers pretty bad. stilled pretty ticked off about the whole experience.... don't get me started!

Welll

i'm sure as he// not gonna beat or "try" to make a brand new part try to fit when i paid for "the correct one" thou ... i would love to pound the.. well you know out of them. I just don't understand why they wont bolt up .. how could this " bracket" move the power-steering box out of the way and at the same time move the pitman arm as well.???? I really don't understand how those machines could pump out thousands of headers and have one or two just not be the same , like how does that happen.

Are the part numbers on the box or somewhere on the headers?
If it is on the box,its the right box but wrong part IN the box.
The bracket is probably for the powersteering pump not the box.
I have always had good results with Headmans.

In most early Mustang/ Cougars it isn't the steering box/pitman arm that interferes, it is the hydraulic ram that is on that side. There is a bracket that moves the end of the link out from the frame enough to allow header clearance. I have yet to see any header ( with the possible exception of certain "shorty" style) that will bolt into an early Mustang/Cougar with p/s that didn't require this bracket...... even if you have the correct part #

Hey Woods would you have a pic of this piece that moves the hydraulic ram . Today a guy told me about this and showed me a "bracket" and i want to know if this is the one . one side is like a triangle and the other is like a rectangle. Im sure its not very easy to understand what i mean but if you did have a pic , i would be able to buy this part and put er on. Thanks guys

Ahhhh---nothing like bashing a brand new set of hooker super comps. that you only spent $400.00 on.That ****in sucks.........(I got myself started):drunk: :spank:
