I just put a new starter on 355 sbc. I shimmed it on one side but had both sides shimmed and the bendix didnt touch flywheel. So now tht I shimmed one side only was wondering after It starts, the bendix doesnt disengage fast enough to get out of flywheels way and makes tht high pitched noise. Is this normal on a new starter?

Not normal, you need to re shim.Or try new starter bolts.A paper clip when straighten out should just fit,but not between the gears,at the point of the gear tooth.Don't shim both sides.I think you need a slightly thicker shim.
