Windstar Wheel hub replacement

264 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  briansansone
So my son drove the 2000 windstar with a loose wheel.....for days apparently . Yea the lugs snapped, and the wheel fell off.
So I cant brake the axle nut free with the wheel still on the car.
Do I have to worry about the transaxle, or anything for that matter, when I put a breaker bar on that nut and break it free?
Is there anything else I should be worried about,,,,after the front end landed on the ground?
It all looks OK. I'll definitely check all the bolts for proper torque

Ive done it before, and I dont remember taking apart the suspenion, or removing the knuckle....but thats what all the videos show.
I think I just pried the hub out< and slipped in a new one.....or am I wrong?

You're right about hub removal. You do have to remove brake caliper and rotor after you loosen the center axle nut. The center axle nut installation torque is around 100 ft-lbs. So it will take at least that to remove it. Use a big breaker bar with wheel mounted on hub and on ground, trans in neutral, park brake set or have some one step on the brake, and wheel chocked. This way the torque to loosen the nut will not stress transmission parts, CV Joints, or half shaft. Nut is standard right hand thread (Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty).

It didnt have a wheel. it snapped off. All the wheel studs broke. I just went for it. I figured if it can take the stress of the torque, while carrying 8 people , it could take the stress of my breaker bar. It came off easy.
The hub also came out easy. No puller, no hammer, no prybars. It just lifted out. Replacing the entire hub ended up being easier than hammering out the wheel studs. Im sure the hub
, and bearings were beaten to hell as the wheel slammed back and forth, for miles and miles. The new rule is; if you hear of feel something banging around...stop F ing driving.
Now I wait for the next round of destruction.
I imagine the wheel is junk at this point also.

Yea the wheel was destroyed. The lug holes turned into lug slots, about an inch long, in the direction of travel.
The wheel also slammed into the wheel well and bent the front fender to the point that the passenger door wont open.
I'm astounded that one would drive around with a loose wheel for days. Its beyond me. As soon as the lugs start to loosen, its blatantly obvious that something is seriously wrong.
All this could have been avoided had he stopped, and at a minimum called me. Tighting the lugs would have fixed the problem. It did a lot of damage.
