I was offered a deal on a 91 4l60 from a gmc full size pick up and was thinking I could put it in my truck that has a 283 from a 66 chevelle in it. Are there any roadblocks to this option. What should I look for?I have a new trans crossmember for this trans already. Oh yeah, the truck is a 49 3100, that might help you see what I am looking at. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I'm courious myself on this, as I too have been considering the 4l60/4l80. I understand that You have to have a stand alone transmission ECM but all the particulars I am fuzzy on. Let's see what we get, cause these guys are good!!!!! The 54' in my photo album has the 700r4 and we love it,but I have been told the 4L series are better??? Brian

Unless I'm mistaken the 4L60 IS a 700R4 with electronic speed sensor instead of speedo drive gears. The 4L60E is the electronically controlled version and a '91 should still be the non-electronic controlled version.

as mentioned the 4L60 is a renamed 700r4 tranny.... various updates to parts were done to the 700/4L60 trans through the years.

4L60E is the electronic controlled - shifted tranny. 1993 introduction year

4L80E is a full electronic controlled - shifted tranny. 1991 introduction year. There was never a 4L80E trans released that was NOT electronic shifted - controlled.. the rumor of a hydraulic/governor shifted 4L80 floats around the internet.

The 283 engine will bolt to the 4l60-700 tranny. Converter bolt pattern should match the 283 flex plate also.

700r/4l60 update

Well, I bought the thing. I removed it from a 4.3 that had a TBI on it. The TV cable was cut and the dip stick tube was broke in half (but hey the dipstick was still there, and no that wasn't reffering to me standing there) :nono: .The converter looks brand new so I was wondering if it is possible to use it? Some of you guys have done many of these so I am here to pick yer brains. As always it is greatly appreciated.

If you're going to use the trans as is it will probably be OK but if you plan on rebuilding the trans I wouldn't reuse it unless you know it's history, it's just not worth the risk.

jakeshoe,

If the trans is OK and that's the converter it's been run with you're safe but if you aren't sure that converter was run with that trans or if you're rebuilding the trans REPLACE it! You wouldn't install a new trans without THOROUGHLY flushing the cooler and lines would you? :nono: What goes through the transmission, cooler and lines also goes through the converter and it's harder than hell to get it all out. You want "who knows what" going through your brand new trans? :pain: No thanks, they just don't cost that much compared to a rebuild and most reputable shops won't warranty a rebuild without a new converter.

Oh yeah, don't know about full size PU's but S-10 700R4's that were behind 4.3's had one less clutch pack......

You didn't specify reuse the trans or converter. It sounded like you were recommending to either use the trans as is, or not to rebuild it because you don't know the history on it (trans).

And my experience has been the S-10 4.3 700-R4s had all the clutches a V8 unit does.

OK, you have a used 700 and a TC, initial cost + labor to install,
run it and if it fails more labor (Yours) R & R and a new TC and cost of rebuild, now how much do you have in it + down time.
Me, I like driving my truck not working on it, save up some more money and do it once, and drive it with confidence.

700/4l60

I apologize for not being so clear, the trans will be rebuilt, but the converter looks brand new, though they showed no signs of being recently separated. Is there a decent source for the TV cable and dip tube online somewhere. Also I hear from people that it is possible with minimal wiring to make this trans lock the converter. Like rigging up a switch? Thanx...Brad

How could be alone, you are in Paradise , I don't know where that is!

I am watching your thread as I am building a 53 Chevy also and will be using a 700R, Did you have to modify your floor to fit the transmission in?

B&M makes a lockup wiring kit, and its sold through Summit Racing. Based on the description, its a well-designed kit. It allows for both automatic and manual lockup (with a switch), and has a status LED to tell you when its in lockup.

Well, EXCUSE me...........

and MY 1992 4.3 S-10 700R4 had one less clutch pack.

I have never seen a 4l60 with a missing clutch pack...

I have seen a few friction plates removed in the small engine ( 6 & 4 cyl) applications.

As with jakeshoe , the 4.3 tranys I have worked on had the v-8 clutch pack friction counts .... smaller boost valves

Guess I'm wrong.

Not sure if it's exactly like the 700 in regards to the electrical connector on the left front corner. But on my 700 I went to the junk yard and scavenged the correct plug in connector and hooked ign controlled power and ground to the (if my feeble arse mind recalls correctly) A and D terminals.(The trans shop that builds it should be able to tell you for sure.)I wired in a toggle switch under the dash. I leave it on all the time and it doesn't engage till 4th gear. As far as the T/V cable and dip stick tube Lokar makes a really nice dipstick tube. Braided stainless flexible tube and milled pull knob. The T/V cable can be bought per application or universal for odd ball setups. If the carb you are using didn't have the connection for the 700/4l60 cable hook up, it is absolutely necessary to get the correct linkage and brackets. The cable won't function right without it, and you run the risk of burning the transmission up. :spank: :pain: Anyway these are the things I have learned putting my 700r in and making it work and work well I might ADD  Here's a link to look at.http://www.lokar.com/interior_pages/tc_kd.htm
