Back again. I did a rebuild kit on 1995 GMC K1500 because of slow/weak reverse.. The low reverse clutch packs were burnt up. After rebuild we still had same reverse issues so we took it apart and put in new spacer plate and different 2-4 band.
I just put it back together again last night and now I have great shifting from 2-3 and 3-4. 1st gear shifts fine at normal speed but is a little soft when I accelerate hard. The reverse is exactly the same as before. I have seen several sites that list this type of problem being: Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the rear of the trans may help (must remove valvebody), or adding a high-viscosity additive such as Lucas Transmission additive or other seal restorer product.
I know the low reverse clutches are good from out last inspection. I also know the sunshell is good from inspection. My questions are. Does removing the checkball from its cage really work and which checkball is removed?
This really seems like a pressure issue to me. We had low pressure on idle in reverse but have not checked pressure at WOT.
Also what about reverse boost valve being replaced? Would this alleviate slow engaging/weak reverse problems?
Any and all ideas would be welcome.
