96 grand am computer problems

I have a 96 grand am that had light front damage and popped both air bags,it has no working gages,fuel temp,speedometer, tach,is there a reset for this,the fuses are good,I tried a different computer from a 96 grand am,it runs two seconds and shuts off,security problem,How do i reset the new computer?It still run's great but I need the gages.


I need help on this

Almost all motor vehicles have what is refered to as OBDII (On Board Diagnostics: Second Generation) after the year 1995 (some before). These computers store info in a chip inside them sort of like RAM in a common PC except much longer periods of time and they will store info with or without power.

I'd be willing to bet that the computer you pulled out of the other car will have to be programmed to fit the car you have it plugged into. This can be done at most any GM dealership or fairly up to date shop with an up to date scan tool and software to match.

You may have many other problems with your situation from the sound of it but just to get the car running this might be worth a shot.

thanks for the reply,I already did try to clear the faults by diconnecting the battery,but the obdII is probably the fault,the ram chip makes sense,i thought i could clear the codes myself but i guess i will take it to a dealer like babyray says,i think i'd rather work on my 69 camaro,thanks.
