I really need to know the best way to make my camaro soooo loud it can be heard rumbling 3 blocks away. I DO NOT want a high pitch sound like those damn hondas. I want a low pitch growl. I've heard I could use glasspacks (what the hell are glasspacks) or replacing muffler with a flowmaster what the hell do I do. I'm getting kinda frusterated and thought about just drilling a damn hole on the pipes (oh my god I feel like such a chick)

Yes Im female

I'm pretty sure Im female. And I really feel like such a girl. NO ONE takes girls serious when they ask questions bout cars. Whats even more sad than that is my dad and brother own a shop and I dont even know how to change my damn oil cuz girls arent supposed to do things like that(though my dad denies thats his way of thinking)

Camaro Exhaust

:welcome:
What year year is your camaro? Back when I was a kid we'd take and cut the exhaust off at the Y pipe and slip on some cherry bombs or thrush mufflers usally (thrush because they were $5.00 to $10.00 cheaper) from the local discount store. The muffler would Dump out right under the drivers seat and you could n't even hear the radio full blast. But we were Cool, But got stopped every time we tried to cruiz town. Well that was a good thirty five years plus ago . I don't know where you are from or the year of you car but the the cadilatic convertor does alot of sound deadning. GOOD LUCK AL :mwink:

open headers is the way to go but watch out for the sound police.
Years ago I had a '72 Duster with a 340 in it. I put headers on it, and before I got the exhaust system finished, I just had to drive it around the block with open headers. Hey, I was 18...

I parked it in the driveway and went inside, and within 10 minutes, 5 different police cars from 3 different agencies cruised past the house. It seems my neighbors had no sense of humor. I put a 3" exhaust system under it with Walker turbo mufflers and still got several mechanical violations for "excessive noise." It seems the Medford Oregon police department has no sense of humor either...

loud as possible

i drive a 95 camaro by looking at the pics of cars here i know its not a hot rod but my baby brother gave me the car and fought tooth and nail against my dad to give it to me so I want to make THIS car into everything i want it to be down to the smallest detail. I dont think i could cut the pipes im a chick in a camaro and that alone draws ALOT of attention where Im from. What about glasspacks or a flowmaster was suggested. Im nit sure which would be be. (I guess I should have said as loud as possible without racking up noise pollution tickets ;) )

Camaro exhaust

:welcome: Flow Master Is a Good Option . And one of the better and more expensive ones . Ya might even consider a test pipe instead of the muffer . A lot of fellas do that in Michigan on the chevy trucks . It sounds real good and has a good rummble. Like I said It's a test pipe (Test and See If the Police Like IT ) :mwink: AL

Trust me you do NOT want it "soooo loud it can be heard rumbling 3 blocks away" and unless your Camaro has a V-8 don't bother, it will sound like a "damn Honda". If it is a V-8 then a Flowmaster, Magna Flow or similar exhaust will give you a nice healthy exhaust tone. Forget glasspacks.

Check this site out before you make any decisions......

Our former Chief of Police did a burnout past my house in his '64 Nova with open headers ......... note I said "former".... that's not what ended his employment but it didn't help matters. ;)

10 replies in 4 hours, nice.

We have other females on the site, and they get respect just as much as the guys do. Word of advice, however, most of them don't remind everybody that they're female in every post. Historically its seen as attention-seeking. Not saying you're doing that, just been around here a while and see some patterns.

Enjoy-

princess,
they still make and sell "cutouts" (JC Whitney- Mr Gasket - ? - $50?)

it is a "Y" shaped piece of pipe, approx 6" long and there is a trap door and cable on one leg of the Y, you mount the cable knob inside the car to open/close the trap door anytime you want

you cut a short section out of the existing exhaust pipe just after the stock "Y" pipe and weld it in there, no need to buy a whole new exhaust system just to make noise

trap door open= loud as hell= no mufflers = almost as loud as open headers
trap door closed= "stock" exhaust noise (trooper next to you at a light)

Whatever it is you end up doing, don't mess with the smog equipment (catylitic convertor) or you'll end up with mud on your face. Flowmaster has a nice, compact free flowing muffler that sounds great, check them out, about 85 bucks a muffler. Dan

The cut outs would be the way to go, put some good Flowmaster mufflers on it for the low rumble, but hit the cutout when you want to rattle the windows. You won't like it to loud all the time.
On MusclecarTV Lou installed a set last week on a Nova that worked off a solenoid, he'll probably go over them a little more on this weekends show as well so watch it.

And I like girls that work on cars. We had two in my HS auto shop class that kept things interesting.

From past trails and meetings with the Sound Police, here is how it brakes down...

Glass Packs (Cherry Bomb): Loud all the time and real load when you stand on it. Higher pitched sound.

Thrush: Loud at idle but muffled at high flow. Deep at low flow and windy at high flow.

Flowmaster: Deep rumble all the time.

I got in the habit when running Glass packs of lifting my go pedal when I saw a cop. With the Thrush it made things worse. Good thing was when I mashed the gas leaving a light it did not draw their attention from 2 blocks away. Next rod will get Flowmasters and big pipes all the way back.

The car I liked the sound of the best was a big block Ranchero. It had glass packs and NASCAR style exhaust which exited between the door and rear tires. Since the pipes were aimed at the ground right behind my ears it sounded great to me and I never got any tickets for the sound. Since state law says exhaust must exit behind the passenger compartment it was legal on the Ranchero.

It is good to see The fairer gender interested. First off I would suggest you examine your motives. Are you truley interested in cars or are you just trying to get some attention, prove something ect. If you are true to yourself and take advice well, then you will find a lot of help here. If you can't take advice or the occasional ribbiing, then it will just be an exercise in frustration.

I am an old geezer and I still like loud, just a bit more refined and in it's place. A nice throaty V8 is still the best sound system any car could ever have. Diesel pickups with huge straight pipes should be crushed with all prejudice. Any loud 4 banger or V6 the same.
Just remember to respect other people's right to NOT have to listen to your noise of choice.
And princess, foul language from a girl is just plain unattrractive in any form. That won't get you far.

Glasspacks, cherry-bombs, same thing...any local auto parts stores will carry these or JC whitney...flow master, magna-flow are good products if you want your car to sound like everyone else

I am going to install an exhaust cut-out like this one...push a button and louder than you-know-what, push the button again and drive past the po-po with no problems.
