best "performance" muffler

I'd like to get everyone's opinion on what they think is the best muffler out there as far as performance goes. Best flowing, best for HP/TQ etc..

I did a search but didn't really see anything that answered my question.

I recently swaped from flowmaster 40's to 50's delta flow and I know you guys are going to say I'm on crack but it seems like I did loose a little top end power.

My set up is

built 350 .060 bore
bowl poerted polished 186 humps
64 cc 2.02 1.60
1.6 roller rockers
no test done but guessing 10.5 CR
victor jr intake
306 duration 550 lift crower cam
modified 750 q jet
accell HEI w/supercoil
headers into 2.5 inch pipes

what would be the best muffler to squeeze out every last bit of power?

thanks for your input.

Dion,

You really should join the 67-72 forum with that ride in your avatar...I have a 71 with a ZZ502....lots of good stuff on that forum---of course I am assuming you aren't on there already.

I vote dynomax....any of them. They are all the same except for packaging and the amount of packing around the inner tube. They are straight through and dont have the raspy metallic sound of flowmasters. Dont get me wrong, I like flomaster alright and have a pair on my 57, but since then I have decided that dynomax is much better and I have two vehicles with them.

In my opinion, most quality aftermarket mufflers will have similar performance. By this I mean that you would probably not feel a "seat of the pants" difference. I think it's more about what kind of sound or sound level you want. I've had a number of exhaust systems on my 500hp 68 camaro. I have 1 3/4" headers and a 2.5" x-pipe system with full tailpipes out the back. my quest has always been about getting the sound I want. I had a set of spintech's on it, didn't like the sound. I had a set of flowmaster 40 series delta flows which I liked a lot. Combined with the x-pipe, they had a pretty mellow sound to them. The cops around here are cracking down, and recently I got an exhaust noise ticket. I went to a set of cheapy dynomax/thrush turbos. It's a lot quieter, but It kind of sounds like a gardening truck. I saw a dyno test using the new super 40 flowmasters that impressed me, so I might try those.

I just order a set of the Spintech Sportsman Street XL mufflers for my Camaro. Just curious which ones you had and what you didnt like about the way they sounded?

great info, thanks guys. It looks like Hooker or Dnyomax might be in my future.

noise level really isn't an issue but I don't want to be oboxious either. I really want to find something that flows great and has the vinyage muscle car sound.

miket, been on that site for a while now and it's great.

thanks again for the input everybody.

No problem....I will keep an eye out for ya when i am on there...

I have Flowmaster 40's with 3" pipe on my 71 ...it has an H Pipe... it's pushing 665hp...its loud inside but nice tone outside

I have Magnaflows on my Chevelle-3inch pipe no "H"...pushing around 750hp...sounds nice out back...

I have Dynomax Super turbo's on the Suburban (496) and they sound warm and mellow.

I like all of them for different reasons. I would try and hook up with a few people in your area to hear them first hand.....just a thought.

From what I've heard, the mufflers themselves all provide pretty similar performance; for my money, it all comes down to personal preference on the sound + your price range. I have Dynomax Bullets on my car, and they sound awesome; my dad has Magnaflows on his Mach and they are great as well. The Flows on our Convertible sound pretty crappy to my ears, but again, that's a very subjective rating. The turbo mufflers I used to have flowed OK and sounded pretty good for a set of $11 muffelrs from Wal-mart. If you can, try and listen to the mufflers you want, either in soundclips or in real life.

To get complicated, some also depends on what type exhaust you plan on running; H-pipe has low-end torque torque + a rumbly, classic, meaty sound, and an x-pipe has more top-end HP + a more "modern", clean nascar sound. tube diameter (2.5 sounds pretty good for your setup, btw) and even muffler placement can affect both sound and your power curve.

IMO I'd get a set of Dynomax anythings or Magnaflows, and strap em on a 2.5" H-pipe setup, and maybe put dumps on the mufflers, or add cutouts for an extra bit of flow at the race track

thanks meka, I looked at that site and at the flowmaster site also. I'm going to check out some of my local cruises and hear in real life some mufflers, that will probably give me some good ideas.

I do like my 3 chamber flows but they sorta sound a like most of the new trucks driving around and some mustangs and that's what I don't want for sure, no offence to them but I want that OG muscle car sound.

thanks again guys.

here's a few vids with the flows

You are all very wrong...

The best for your money are cherry bomb's. Straight through, no restriction, good muffle with lots of deep resonance.

Not obnoxious and not raspy. They sound like performance even if you are stock. I have them in my nova,307, no mods, and my 71 mercury marquis,429, dual pipes, dual bombs out back, only mod on that is a trailer hitch!

Thepart number is 87502 and the are 2 inch in and 2 inch out, or whatever you need . Mine are 18 inches long and all i did was u-bolt them on the pipe ends. The nova is getting tired, and had troble barking the tires. With cherry bomb on it, breaks loose every time! No b.s.

The merc makes a huge difference. That motor runs much better without the old mufflers. Better performance, and a killer sound. It'll turn heads before it turns the corner with those bombs!

And at only 15-25 dollars, its the best deal in town. And if you have headers, you can buy bombs that bolt right up for only 25 dollars.-justin

Well, that goes to show that it depends on the sound you want ALOT. Personnally, I HATE glasspacks. I have, as long as I can remember, refered to them as ******* pipes. I would not run a glasspack on my lawn mower, but that is just me.

If you are going for an era correct sound building a rod that was poplular when glasspacks were the hot ticket, I can understand. Otherwise a set of $30 dynomax bullets is hard to beat IMO.

I too have the dynomax bullets.
true dual 2.5 inch exhaust, no H pipe, no X cross over.Hooker comp long tube headers. I've got the pipes cut off EXACTLY 18 inches past the cab with no downturn. I like 'em loud. And the bullets at 6K in a tunnel sounds like the world coming to an end. They have a great rumble to them too, very deep in tone. If the rpm's are right (or wrong) when you talk over them it sounds like you're talking into a fan  I swear that the only thing louder than the bullets is open headers.
As for backpressure, the answer would be; "what back pressure?"
