Hi All Re: building your own sandblast cabinet.

If you know anyone who does maintenance on traffic signals, See if you can get hold of an old traffic controller cabinet. Many of the older ones are about 60"h x 34"w x 30" deep. Most are made of steel, some are aluminum and a few are SS.. They have a great hinged door. Frequently these have been retired because the bottoms are a little rust rotted. Lay the cabinet on its side (hinge down) and build a simple leg framework, so that the cabinet front angles up like the manufactured ones. Cut off the rotted bottom and weld on a 10 gauge plate. Use the door (it has a gasket on it) for the back and access for your parts and put your plexiglass window and arm holes in the back (opposite the door) of the cabinet.. The top of the cabinets were made with an exhaust fan to suck out the hot hair, use it to fabricate your exhaust air duct.
Oh yeah, DON'T go down to the corner signal and cut off the cabinet that's making the signals run. Besides there's 240 volts in there and cops already know where you live.

Here are some pictures of the cabinet that I have constructed. It was bought as a kit here in the UK. It includes all the hardware and fixtures, fittings etc. It provides you with a plan, cutting table and assembly instructions. All you need to supply are 2 8' x 4' sheets of plywood and your time. Dust extraction is via an old vacuum cleaner.

I hooked it up to my 3hp compressor and it works perfectly.

It comes as a self build kit here in the UK and includes all fixtures, fittings, plans, cutting tables, instructions etc. All you need to add are your time and two 8 x 4 plywood sheets.

I run it off my 3hp compressor and dust extraction is via an old vacuum cleaner. The windows, which are polycarbonate, are covered on the inside with film which is sacrifical. Once this is abraded and vision is poor, I remove the window, replace the film and vision is restored.

plans?

Any chance anyone can give me the name of the company that sold you the plans? Im building a cabinet very similar, but am having alot of trouble making the catch basin, or bottom portion of the thing. Im in need of some definite measurements for sections of the bottom, or failing that, an idea for something to use that measures 51 x 18 with a funneling action.

Any ideas guys? I came over here from a google search, but if there are any wwII jeep enthusiasts here, check out another forum - g503.com, excellent place to get advice and help. on jeeps anyway.

I'm attaching some pictures of the hopper in response to Jeepster as I had trouble trying to figure out how to attach them to pm.

sand blaster out in the open this would be much cleaner.
