There is a lot of carbon deposits in my carb and under the air cleaner lid. Is this normal? If not how would I fix this?

Thx for your advice in advance.

More info on engine and vehicle configuration would be helpful.

How its driven would be useful info as well.

The secondaries appear wet, is this true?

Long overlap or late closing cams in a slow turning engine push mixture out the intake making things wet and if done long enough will carbon up surfaces.

Excessive fuel level in the secondary bowl of the Holley will dribble into the intake.

It's a GM crate 502 HO motor in a 69 corvette.
Driven as a normal street car. Secondaries appear wet because I happened to squirt some gas when I pushed on the little lever next to the secondaries.

Can you wipe it off with your fingers?
Backfires out the carb will do that and will be black and sooty.

A PCV breather returning to the air cleaner that has blowby mainly on hard acceleration can do that too and will wipe off dark and oily feeling.

Yes, It wipes off real easy and it's dark and sooty.
The PCV breather does not return into the air cleaner.

Burping out the carb buddy... My swinger was doing that a lot the last few runs. I replaced it, full timing ans tune up, no more carbon on top. I also had a little residue from PCV return. I also noticed that if that butterfly on top is at an odd angle it will "splash" fuel places you wouldnt expect. Leaves an odd residue too...

I've seen this condition a lot with Holleys. They always seem to have been in a fire.
I am going to get it tuned and timed, although timing is out of my tech abilities.
The dealer quoted me $500 for a full timing and tuning (parts & labor).

Does anyone on this forum have a shop in the Bay Area, CA or know someone who works on carb motors?

Your in San Jose, I'm in Lakeside. Come enjoy the weather and the ride back. A good part of that $500 should be spent on a vacation! :D
Tell me about it..
I spend a significant amount of time working on the car and even more on the hotrodders.com and the corvetteforum.com

Where's time to drive the car?
