Hello folks. I have a 408" BBC in an '84 Cuddy w/3.42 gears. Comp. is 9.7 to 1 and the cam is a 270 magnum w/224* @.050". Vacuum is 13" at idle and 18" at cruise (2800rpm). I have a holley 770 street avenger and it hasn't worked right since new. I've tried most of the latest fixes and I'm done with it! Can you guys recommend a carb that actually works for my combo? Is a mechanical secondary something to consider? It must have a choke. BTW the turbo 400 has a 2400 rpm stall in it. Also it's got a Weiand dual plane intake. I'll be at work all day, but look forward to your opinions. Still new to the site and not really sure how to respond to people who answer my posts. Forgive my ignorance.

You have a good setup there and the street avenger is a good carb if its tuned right. They are notorious for having issues but nothing that can't be hammered out. What are the issues your having with it. Don't get a new carb as you will only have the same troubles as all carbs need to be tuned. Tell us what is your timing curve like as that has a big effect on carb adjustment etc and what all have you done so far. That cam will need about 16 initial timing to run good and you would wan't your mechanical timing all in around 3000 rpm or a little over. I run a cam similar in size in a small block and my timing curve is 16 initial and all in just around 3000 and it runs fine.

What is n 84 Cuddy?

What exactly are the problems with the carb?

When you get into bigger cams lots of strange stuff happens so it gets necessary to know what's going on to figure out if it's a carb problem or tuning issues. This is to head off spending a lot of money throwing parts at it while not solving the problem.

A cuddy is an olds cutlass. I have an off idle issue with the carb. I installed a bigger squirter and it helped bet hesitation still there. dropped down to 70 jets on primaries and still feels rich, yet hesitates at speed when slowly given gas. four barrels don't seem to want to open either, but I might have a torn diaphragm. I have the purple spring in it. I have an air fuel ratio guage but haven't installed it yet. working too much, lol
