the car is timed, 14'' vaccuum. no leaks, the gauge is steady. and i plugged every accesory vaccuum just to make sure.sounds good, revvs real smooth like a balanced motor should.no noises but when i put it in gear it puts a load on the motor and wants to nearly stall it and i hear a clunking or loud ticking noise underneath the car (cant hear it inside the car) if i take it out of gear you dont hear it.. transmission was just rebuilt... has like 2 miles on it from driving it home from the shop. (700r4) the last tranny (original 350) did the same thing and wanted to stall the motor. although i never "heard" the ticking noise before. its possible i just never noticed it. the motor has about 2,000 miles on it. total rebuild. what could it be? everything is new in the drivetrain so i dont know what to narrow it down to. any ideas?

If that ticking is detonation, sounds like your timing is too far advanced.............What is the timing set at? Where is your vacuum advance line attached to on the carb?

Check the converter. From what it sounds like I had the exact same problem. Am I right in guessing that the sound is lower in volume if you put it in reverse? I spent a looooong time troubleshooting until I got the converter down and had a look at it. The bearings where completly done for. Just get a hooked, thick steel wire and hook it on to the turbine inside. Pull. Can´t remeber the tolerance but I had some 0,078" play. Way too much.

i doesnt sound like the pinging that ive heard before when an engine is detonating from timing. besides, it only does it when i put it in gear. the actual timing... i dont know how many degrees. i timed it where it performs best and smoothly. i just kinda eyeball the distributor.. i know its not too far out...from past experiences. one main thing... the 12 volt hook up on the 700r4 tranny isnt hooked up yet. could this have anything to do with the problem?

First of all verify timing with a light. You or anyone I have ever met no matter how good, has ever been to properly set timing by ear. It might work, but your still off enough to cause problems.

Second, have some one look of crawl under the vehicle while you step on the brake HARD with the E-Brake set HARD to keep fomr killing yourselfs and listen. A peice of hose or even better, stethoscope works well for finding noises. This will verify where the noise is eminating from.

I see a transmission shop in your near future...

The trans in my 90 GM truck (with a lockout converter) did the same thing - the converter let loose and plugged the trans cooler and blew up the transmission on me about 2 weeks later...I'd go by a trans mechanic you trust and have them take a look at it.
