I'm pretty new to all of this still so I appreciate the patience, I have BASIC knowledge Chevy small blocks. I acquired a 74 Chevelle Malibu 4 door it has the 350 and 350 trans I was playing with it the other day got it to start but would not keep running I'm thinking maybe fuel pump but I'd like to pull the motor put new seals bearings rings etc.. my question is a guy I work with has a 83 Impala with a 350 that got T boned motor is still good looking to buy it off him just to use while I rebuild the other as far as I could tell it has all the smog emissions stuff and my 74 Malibu doesn't I've seen it's possible to take off the smog pump "air pump to the exhaust" but does anybody know what other emissions stuff it would have and can i remove it and what would it affect? we do not have emissions where I live so I am not too concerned also out of curiosity motor mounts should be the same correct?

That's pretty much it, use the intake manifold off your '74 350 if you can. Use your '74 distributor and the '74 carb too.

Basically it is just the A.I.R. pump(smog) and lines that are different, but the '83 will also have a computer controlled distributor and carb(idle circuit is the computer controlled part), so you don't want to use those. At least I think '83 was first year for the CCC distributor and carb.... CCC distributor has no vacuum advance can, so it is easy to identify, and CCC carb has an electrical plug on the top front of it

Motor mounts should be the same , but best idea is to just put the '74 mounts on the '83 engine, then you know it will fit. You will also need to use the '74 exhaust manifolds , the '83 are shaped different and outlet in a slightly different spot. Bolt pattern to the head is the same for both years however, so that is no problem to swap.

Some of the '83 accessory brackets are different, like the power steering pump brackets and possibly the water pump casting where the pump bracket mounts, so use the '74 stuff there too...alternator brackets also. '83 alternator may be higher amperage than your '74, but will plug right into the '74 wiring and work fine, plus it would be a nice upgrade ;)

I really appreciate the information thank you, I'm trying to steer away from the intake manifold and carb on the 74 being it's the stock 2 barrel if I have to use it that's OK too. I have a 400 Pontiac motor in my garage its the 500557 block would you happen to know if the intakes are interchangeable?

Dont be surprised if you swap the intake and carb if the new engine wont stay running either. You problem sounds carb related. i think I would try to sort out the issue you have now before moving any possibly bad parts to a new engine.

Depends on how built up the rebuilt 350 you plan to do is going to be.
Mild street car look at 600-650 cfm vacuum secondary carbs.
More aggressive street look at 750-800 cfm vacuum secondarys

I prefer Holleys for their easy adjustability and easy to find parts.

Intake manifold....take a look at this link and make a choice that fits your build and wallet

So I ended up pulling a 350 out of a suburban I have and looking to put it in the Malibu. The Malibu had points on it and the suburban 350 has electronic ignition I was told that they make an adapter wiring harness for this. Have any of you guys ever used one of those or have any information about this?

I have a 1977 grand prix put sbc and 350 turbo transmission in, problem I'm having is transmission cross member needed to be slid forward from the original position of previous placement, but only one of the bolts fit on drivers side and the trans mount is slightly off from side to side maybe 3/8in. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

When entering a forum as it firsts presents before you touch any other buttons there will be at the upper left of the thread list of the current forum content there is a small and I mean small (eye test) botton titled "New Thread".

Given the engine is in already I think the easy answer is to bolt the stock cross member into its stock location. Then measure for and obtain a piece of plate steel 3/8ths to 1/4 inch thick or 1/4 inch aluminum plate that bolts to the transmission pad of the cross-member at one end and passes under the TH350 rear mount where you will drill the holes and attach the rear mounting pad to the extension you made.

Thanks for your reply, i did think of this ,but seems that would cause sag , original transmission location is 6 to 8 in. away, cross member would be under the drive shaft, does anyone know if a different cross member would work like a monte carlo maybe or a different trans mount

The plate will carry that load over 8 inches but this requires asking what is the tail housing length of your TH350? The TH350 comes in 6, 9 or 12 inch tail housings. Measure from the mating flange to the main-case to the end of the housing.
