The engine will handle it, don't worry.

The rest depends on how you want to do it... meaning, "what is your definition of daily driver?"

Vortecs will be a HUGE upgrade over those stock heads. They won't like feeding 383 cubes at 6000 rpms, but they're a lot better than what is on there now. For about $700 you can have a brand new set that is modified for more lift. You'll have to use a Vortec intake, but everything else will bolt up.

Edelbrock makes nice heads. Not a thing wrong with them. I prefer the E-tec heads because they incorporate some of the Vortec design elements like taller/raised ports and a little better chamber/plug orientation.

Trick Flow doesn't get a lot of press, but I was throroghly impressed with the TFS heads on my 302 Ford. Chevy guys don't seem to be too impressed.

I have a long-running love/hate relationship with AFR. When you buy 180cc heads from them, that means they were CAST as 180cc heads and then CNC ported. Actual finished port volume is much larger than they advertise. You are looking for the flow you need from the smallest possible port. Flow = HP, small ports = TQ and street manners. The way AFR advertises their numbers is just shady to me. They make great flow for 180cc heads, but that's because they're actually more like 191cc until they get done porting. If you buy Edelbrock heads that are 190cc, they will spec out to 190cc - period. The net result with AFRs is disappointing dyno numbers and races lost to guys with ported stock heads. I know because I've been on both sides of that track - the losing car with AFRs, and then the car with ported stockers that smear the guy in the next lane with AFRs.
