i have a 2000 buell with a 1200cc harley motor. bike was sitting for a year and don't know if this could be a reason for the problem im having. there are three things that can happen when i start off in first gear. most of the time it just rides fine. but a lot of the time it hesitates for a slight second and will then kick in. and what happens less but still does is i will be letting out the clutch and it will just die on me even while giving it gas, not immediately but you can see the tach steadily drop to zero. otherwise it rides awesome outside of this problem.

Doc here, :pimp:

I see you live in Chi~town...Was it moist/Wet where you stored your Scoot?

Clean out the Carb, needle and bowl And, Fuel filter for winter "Gators" that grow in bad gas (that white flaky stuff that floats around), Dump the fuel, It may have water condensation in it, and clean the tank.

Don't Put in any "Clean as you Drive" additives, This will just hose it up worse. Clean it out by hand.

The fuel may also may not have the punch it was born with after sitting for so long, so you need to replace that. Even if you topped it off, It will keep mixing for a long time. so dump & dry it out.

New Fresh oil will make it happy too...since it sat so long you should do it as a matter of bringing it out of Mothballs...Look in the oil tank for water droplets (condensation) While that won't affect your specific problem, That may need attention too.

Next time, when you store it, If you can, leave only about a pint of fuel in it, try to start and warm it once a month, run out the old, and add a new pint of fresh fuel each time you do it!

actually i just purchased the bike recently from illinois harley in berwyn. it was inside there. and the title shows that they got the bike a year ago and the odometer only went up 9 miles. soooo. i shall look at it, take the carb off and clean it out, hopfeully that clears it up.

thought id also add that it has an aftermarket intake, i didn't know if this could have allowed more air which could produce this type of problem

Assuming you have cleaned out the carb and installed fresh fuel; I'd suggest that you change the setting on the accelerator pump. They are set at the factory to run best at sea level. This setting becomes too rich above 2000 ft. elevation and the pump needs to be leaned out. You will experience a serious bog when opening the throttle from a low RPM if it has too rich a setting. This is true for all the carbs I have ever used on a Big Twin engine. Bendix, Kein (spelling?) , any S&S, etc. You should also check that your air cleaner is clean and that your air/idle screw is properly adjusted. Run the factory suggested plugs. I have not seen any aftermarket plugs work well in a Harley with the exception of Bosch. Clean or replace the fuel filter.
