Just put an alternator on my truck with a SBC that has a v type belt. How do I measure to get a right size belt that will go to the crank to water pump to alternator?

I usually wrap an electric cord around the path of the pulleys, mark both ends, measure and buy whats indicated. Make sure that the adjustable pulley is in mid point of adjustment so you can tighten the belt.
I never toss out old V belts. I keep a couple cut V belts around just for this purpose. I wrap one around the pulleys, and then use a tape measure to measure the missing gap. Or if the belt I have is longer, I makr where they overlap, and deduct it from the belt.
Once I have the measurement, I take my mockup belt with me to the parts store and find one to match.

The kind that seamstress and tailors use work perfect for this. About $3 at the drugstore. Measure around the top of the pulleys, take that measurement to the parts store and they'll hook you up with a belt.
