Just wanted to know how much work on your car/truck do the membership actually do. The best way to me is conduct a poll. When I say work I mean tear down, sandblast, rebuild engine and trans, welding & fabrication, body work (sanding, prep work, painting, etc...) assembly, tuning & set-up after she's completely assembled. I figure I'm doing 99% of the work to my truck. The only thing that I can't do myself is machining for the rear 4-link I'm fabricating. Don't have a lathe. :(
Now I know there is some guys that get alot done by someone else other than themselves, there are some that get some done and there are guys that pretty much do it all. Anyways I was just curious to see what results and feedback I'll get from this poll. Thanks

I do pretty much everything with the exception of machine work on blocks and heads. Haven't done rear end setup yet but will be doing that on my Deuce project, including narrowing the housing which should be an experience.

I'm building a 55 Chevy 2nd series stepside truckrod, doing everything myself except for the upholstery. Tore it down to the ground, and started building it up from there. I bought a SBC crate engine for it, don't have the time/knowledge/tools to build one up myself. So far the chassis is all done with new modern suspension front and rear, I plan to sandblast and start the bodywork in the spring. I want to do it all as much as possible so I can learn/get better at this. Besides, why pay someone to do what I already have the skill to do? I'll write a check for an upholsterer though!

Thusfar , I've done everything that had to be done or I wanted done. I have sent 1 transmission out for a rebuild , and bought one paintjob. Otherwise , I learned bodywork , engine work , interior , etc by trial and error. Adn believe me , I've done some crazy stuff out of necessity/desire. Standard trans to auto , manual brakes to power , bucket seats from a bench setup , etc , and so-forth.Custom stereos ( learned from my brother )and paint jobs. I haven't won any trophies , but have dropped some jaws when asked ' how much did that cost ya?' .

Hey its nice to see how much we all do when we do a project, eh? Well I don't reupholster seats I just purchase new or used ones. I don't do any machine work and I didn't have to do any to my 350 block it was done by the previous owner. I'm going to purchase new heads and rebuild the trans. Have a shop drill the holes for the rod ends for the 4-link. I'm doing alot of fabbing and welding and have just built a 528 sq ft garage with 12' ceiling in the last few months and I did most of the work myself on that too. I would say more realistically 95% of the work myself when I really think of it.
Anyways I like the response so far and its good to see we all have a place like this to share our information. I've learned more here than anywhere else. Thanks!!

The roadster I did everything, including building the body and chassis, with the exception of driveshaft shortening (which I've done before with semi-disastrous results) and cutting of the windshield glass. Entire build is documented here

On my current project, this sedan/delivery/pickup, I'm doing everything except the interior (being done by Dan TwoLakes), driveshaft shortening, and engine machine work (bore, hone etc). Entire build is documented here

On the other hand, with a few minor exceptions, I did virtually nothing on my '32 pickup. Charlie Titman (shown here on left) built it from top to bottom and you'd have to put a gun to my head to get me to part with it. Point being, I think hot rodders can love their cars no matter how much of the work they do themselves.

Not as much as I would like to. I like the chassis build the most. I'm in a situation where I can trade a chassis job for either body and paint or upholstery. This works really well for me as I usually have the next chassis built in my head by the time the one I'm working on is ready to go out the door.

everthing

I do everything myself. I used to do custom bike work but cant ride now because of my back so I got back in to rods. The main reason I do everthing myself is that I'm poor and CHEAP :D . I have a hard time saying no to people too so I try to keep to myself...It seemed like every day I had someone showing up on my doorstep that I MET ONCE AND NOW THEY EXPECT FREE WORK.

I do not do upholstery ... I have done everything else ... :)

1) I hate bodywork ... but do it
2) I was a tool and die maker and also worked in a automotive machine shop. I have machined many engine projects ( my own and others ) ... built many engines
3) I cut weld and fabricate ... but now my welding skills are diminished ... ( cataract surgery in both eyes ) cannot see well enough up close under a welding helmet. for critical strength chassis work ... had a friend weld up the chassis ( He is way better than I )
4) Electrical ... do it but not my favorite thing
5) Love to run hard lines ... fuel, transmission and brake ... even do this for $$$ for others ... IF I like the car.
6) Built many 4 speeds and 3 speeds ... and a few automatics But I paid a guy to built my 700R4
7) Set up my own 9 inch Ford ring and pinion
8) Made the driveshaft ( had a friend balance it )

Have to send out chrome plating ... have to get my glass cut ...

I try to do everything I can. It is a hobby ... so I try and learn. I am retired now, and I cannot move around or see as well as I used to. Getting older SUCKS  I have a bought crate engine in this car ... as well as a bought 700R4 ... But I have built many engines and transmissions in the past.

This is most likely my last full project car ... so I bought some stuff I normally would do myself ... time is a issue ... I want to drive and ride in this coupe sooner than later

You guys are men among men. I love the fact that most of you do almost all the work yourself. The pictures are cool too. I miss the days of doing it myself, you guys have got it made.
Anyone who has money can write a check, it takes alot more than that to build it yourself. Keep it up guys, it is what hotrodding is all about.

I try to do as much myself as possible, mostly cause I'm cheap! :welcome: It's a hobby for me, but I like to learn and try new things. Like most, I have to farm out some stuff like machining, glass & driveshafts. And actually, wiring is one of my favorite things to do.

I did buy a stage III chassis when I built my T Bucket, mostly because it was my first hot rod and didn't want to learn how to weld on my first frame. But I did everything else on the build myself. I'm at the point now though, I'd build one from scratch no problem.

On this mustang project, I'm doing more. All new floors and sheetmetal parts, interior, some minor motor work. The bodywork is a whole new experiance. It's incredible how much time it takes. I swear ever square inch is touched at least 50 times!!!!!!

My next project is a '31 model A sedan and will do everything on that including the chassis. Can't wait!
