How to Determine Which SBC 350 I Have

Dipstick on the drivers side tell you this is pre 1979/80 engine. 350’s were built starting in 1967.

The casting number leads to both the bore diameter and main bearing diameters. There is a cross over period in the late 1960’s where casting could build a medium journal engine of either 302, 327 or 350 all bring 4 inch bore castings. Prior to the 350 there were casting numbers that built 4 inch bore engines with small main journals of 302 and 327.

IT suffix code says it is a 350 built in 1969 configured with a 4bbl for full size commercial or government passenger vehicle built to a contract. That would have the dipstick on the drivers side, North America. Tonawanda, New York would be where the engine was built. The L code is part of the vehicle VIN code telling you this engine was mated to a vehicle at the Van Nuys, California assembly plant.

The head casting number will give an idea of compression ratio. I’d expect this with a 4bbl would be a 290-300 horse with a cam timing in the range of 195-205 at .050 with a lift of about .430 at the valve, in other words an average 350. These were built with 2bbls rated at. 240-250 horse or with a 4bbl rated at 290-300 the cam and compression is the same between them the power floated a little year by year as Chevy was dinking with compression ratios kind of testing the waters for the soon to arrive SMOG era that came to California earlier than elsewhere.
