it would seem that my 1st and 2nd rings have about a quarter inch gap? And the oil rings have about and eigth. I must blame the guy i bought them from because I trusted he knew the motor was bored out. so now i can drop a couple hundred bucks on new rings and pull the thang back together. then it shall sit in my garage till i find a car.

Don't trust ANYBODY!!!

...The 1st rule of engine building! You have to install and CHECK each part. If you don't have the patience to do that then I would suggest you let a "pro" do your engine work. Don't get me wrong we all "F"-up at sometime, but you don't want to learn the hard way on engine building, get alittle pricey!!! ...been there, done that! *G* Good Luck ...Mark

A must when assembling an engine: Always check ring end gaps prior to install. Easy way to do it: Place Ring about 1/4 way down the bore and use a piston to "square it up" in the bore by pushing the piston in the bore head first using the conn. rod as a handle. Use a feeler gauge to check end gap and compare to the manufacturer specs, the ring manufacturer that is.

If you are working on used bores(not re-bored or just honed) it's good to check the ring gap at several depths within the bore to give you an idea how much taper the cylinder has. A good cheap way to check cylinder bores if all you have is a feeler gauge.

I check all engine specs when assembling an engine. I always assume the parts are wrong until I confirm them.

sheet happens no biggy just learn from it & you pay your price. find someone with qualified experience & ask any questions you have- after going thru manual first. burgers & beer offer may get him to spend acouple of hours with you & get it done right with extra info he may share/ you may learn. look up procedure for ring gap measurement, filing, & spacing before anything. take your time & you'll enjoy listing to motor when its running jwart

Thanks for all the critiques, I made said mistake 8 years ago, and I have learned since. That is why I am tearing the motor apart. The thing ran pretty decent even with the wrong rings though. Just lots of blow by and not as much power as i thought.

Wow, how long have you run the motor like that? I expect your compression was pretty low with a 1/4" gap hehe. Ahh well, you'll get it right this time i'm sure. Just double check yourself so you don't have to do it again. The only motor I ever rebuilt was my XR200Rs motor. I only had one cylinder to worry about though. It gets some blow-by but everyone of those motors I have seen burns a little oil, I think they were designed to. Have a 406 SB I hope to put together soon.

BBC

SBF

2 6
3 7
4 8

look at the above examples and Ill tell you what happend to me once, My dad was building a 402BBC, well this was "top secret" and I didnt even know about it untill dad called me up and ask me If Id adjust the lifters on a solid flat tappet cam he had just installed, well, when I got there the motor was on a stand and he had refreshed the 402, so I started going through the valves right, well, I adjusted #1 and was going to go through the firing order, I said now whats the firing order? and quess what? he had assembled the shortblock like the SBF example!...hahahaha!
I had to tear it down and do it again...He was in such a big hurry (for a local track gathering) he made a big mistake, we made it and posted some really good times in the process, and we build 2 or three motors a year and it just goes to show a quick throw together is never a good idea, and aside of putting a 327 crank in backwards once, I cant think of a bigger mistake that what happend to us, so......we live and learn..

You are from Barcelona, Spain I suggest you keep your moth shut Till you clowns figure out how to make and use real toilts rather then craping in a hole on your niebours house

Your information is way out of date, houses here are built to high standards, the toilets especially. I been to Canada and I love it,
been there six times.Did the Icefield Parkway in January, plus trips all over the Rockies and to Vancouver.
Have you been to Spain?
I am British, I happen to live in Spain.
I will not shut my "moth"
