I found this gizmo at a yard sale, and bought it not knowing what it was....it just looked like something I should buy. It's definitely automotive related. Does anyone care to guess what it is? And if you know what it is, please explain how it was used, because I don't have a clue.

Gizmo

It's a tire patching tool. The patch goes between the flat surface and the tube. A flammable substance is added to the cup like area and lit the heat vulcanizes the patch and the tube.

Any idea as to what sort of "flammable substance" was used to generate the heat??

Probably a mixture of sulphur and potasium nitrate.
