I just finished a crank up to do one (was doing a 451 with the 400 block-440 crank). Of course the main journals on the crank are turned down as you said( Some align bore the block instead). Also the counterweights will hit if left alone. Some grind the block to clear, but I think its more common to turn the crank counterweights down (7.25" "rotating" diameter as I recall). This usually works well as you end up with a much lighter piston anyway so it balances out well. I managed to finish mine cheaper than most as I cut my counterweights at work (machine shop)...
But ,alas, it was all for nothing...When I called to order my pistons and rods, The guy pointed out that for about $400 I could have a brand new forged stroker crank as part of a kit.. To make a long story short , I'm now building a 512" engine and my turned 440 crank, who knows what I'll do with it?
