IAC (Idle Air Control)... Up on top of the intake has a 2 wire plug and 2-10mm headed bolts that hold it in place... R&R it (go to the Ford dealer for the correct replacement)... :thumbup:

 

you could just clean it,do it all the time with air intake cleaner(the iac).

 

Anyone have a diagram?I just looked and didnt see anything like that.

 

I have had similar issues with both of my T-Birds (94-97)
Both of em needed the MASS airflow sensor replaced
(the 97 died in rush hour traffic--on the freeway)

Also----a sticky EGR valve could do the same thing (sticking open)

it is mounted to the side of the throttle body should be by two bolts remove them clean the area put on new gasket tighten bolts 71 to 97 inch pounds

 

it almost was getting starved of fuel.then we got it to the next gas station and now it keeps dieing when put in gear,any gear,SO i had to keep the gas down a bit while putting it in gear or coming up to stop signs to stop it from dieing.

Does it run OK except it won't idle? If it is an idle problem only, then IAC is a good place to start.

Got a check engine light? Steady or blinking?

 

just for info,A MAF(Mass air flow) sensor can also be cleaned and should allways be tested befor it 's replaced.

 

do you mean cleaning the heat element in the sensor

 

there are two elements.one visable another in the tube.the one in the tube is to be cleaned.I spray into the tube with a little tube.NOT carb cleaner!AIR INTAKE CLEANER or motor vac chemical.also clean the visable one.it's really hard to diagnose through Email,so before changing parts I would have it check.I would clean the IAC frist. Also look for vacume leaks

Yeah the check engine light comes on like every ten minutes for about 5 mins then shuts off.It wont idle while in gear,it idles in park but doesnt sound as strong as it should

 

Alright i found the IAC and cleaned it,it was pretty nasty,I cleaned the MAS,I also cleaned that valve with the spungy thing in it.It doesnt die anymore but still runs like crap.When the engine is cold it doesnt do it.After it gets full warmed up it sputters when you accelerate from a dead stop,also while going a steady speed it does it.The fuel filter was kinda bad so i replaced it.What else could it be?It feels like its getting starved of gas at certain times.any help is appreciated

 

Just for good measure, you should also replace the fuel filter and either dump some HEET into the tank or siphon out the old gas and replace it. Sounds like you might have some water in the tank from sitting.

 

I replaced the fuel filter,and it was on empty when i fixed the electrical problem,just put a half a tank in yesterday and some fuel injector cleaner.It was only sitting for a month but started it every couple of days

It wasnt empty while it sat,i was running it all the time while trying to fix the electrical problem.It sat for 3 days on empty,but still had just enough to get to the gas station

It is a non vented tank..... vented only to a carbon canister, not directly to the atmosphere.

 

What code are you getting? with the intermitent light?

Its running like crap,it doesnt die anymore it runs fine while its cold but when it warms up it sounds like its getting starved of gas or something.it like hesitates while accelerating from a dead stop.while going a steady speed it jerks like one second its getting gas and then it isnt and then it is.

 

sounds like possibly the cam sensor if the check engine light is going in an out could be an interrmitten fault just had similar problem with a 00 dodge intrreped cam sensor solved the problem. R & R it

 

What code are you getting? with the intermitent light?
