I have a 221 V8 in my 62 Fairlane and was wondering if anybody knows much about these baby sb Ford v8. I was wondering if I could put a 302 crank in it and use 302 rods and stroke it a little bit. Before anybody tells me to just use a 302 or 351W, I want to keep this engine just to be different.

This is not really the information I was looking for. I was needing to know if anybody has ever had any experience with modifying this engine. More along the lines of will the pistons clear the crank throws if I put a 302 crank and rods in this engine.

The 221 externally is identical to the 260/289 and 302 (also the useless 255, but there are really no performance parts for that lump). The 351W is wider and taller then the smaller displacement engines but it is the same length. Another gotcha with the 221 is the 5 bolt bell housing circle vs the late 289-302 six bolt bell. You will have to dig in, but the engine main and rod bearings will be identical, 221-302 as are the cam bearings. Bore spacing and deck height are the same ....... but no clue as to how much you can bore, but for sure not a half inch (.250 on the radius) to equal the 302's 4" bore. A late289/302 and better transmission might look inviting about now:D

. Don't know if you'd have to shave about .060" off the bottom of the 221 pistons to clear the 302 crank/rods or not...

. The 221 and 302 look the same... the 351W looks and is wider because of the taller block/wider intake manifold... the 302 can be easily bored/stroked to 347" with available kits... prolly even 353"...

. Stroking with 302 crank gives a 231... gain of only 10 cubic inches... add .030" overbore gives a 235... still no powerhouse, prolly not worth the effort... don't know if any off the shelf pistons available for this stroker combo... $400-600 for a set of custom pistons...

. Might try http://www.enginekits.com

The 170 inline six uses the same pistons as the 221 and they do make forged pistons for those engines. They are expensive, $650 for six of them, would be two pistons short, lol. This is what I would like to do if I can. I would use a 302 crank and rods and stroke the engine to 3.0 stroke if the pistons don't smack the counter weights. Bore the block out .030, balance it to 28 ounce, use a 157 tooth flywheel and 302 harmonic balancer. I have a roller cam from a 2000 5.0 Explorer, would use link bar lifters. I would add 289 valves to the heads if they fit the chambers. I have a 84 Factory Ford Mustang 5.0 aluminum intake manifold that I would use on this small engine . I don't want a race horse, just wanting to hop up the little 221 a bit and keep the original engine in the car. I also would swap out the three speed on the tree for a BW T10 four speed on the floor.
