Ok guys, I've got a Pontiac 400 that's been stroked to a 455. It currently has a Bullet cam in it that is 231/239 and it's just too radical for me. I looked it up and it stated it was for bracket racing. I'm just looking for something that is going to be super reliable with a nice sound to it. Oh, and I'm using the stock 6x heads with roller rockers. Thanks.

You need to supply more info if you want help. Everything you know about the engine, transmission and rear end will get you some valid answers

I looked at this thread because I find tin engine stuff interesting, even though I know nothing in particualr about it. I've read through the posts twice, and have yet to find a question from the OP. Are you looking for a new camshaft recommendation for a cam that would perhaps be more streetable?

Look at the title of the thread. There's the question.

Does the fact that its a 400 with a 455 crank
Have anything to do with picking a cam ?
Or can he just shop for cams for a pontiac 400?
The fact that it is a 455 makes a difference in terms of how the motor will behave.

As the displacement goes up the powerband goes down.

If the cam is for a 400 and it has a powerband of say 2000rpm-6000rpm in a 400, then in a 455 stroker it will be less.....more like 1700-5100rpm.

Well...not knowing your compression ratio or intentions, it's hard to say, but it sounds like you just want a tuff cruiser...so I would second the Summit 2801. It's basically the 068, although that may be a little weak for a 455, I don't know. The Summit 2802 sounds pretty nasty in a 400 but should be a lot milder in a 455. Everyone's idea of "rough idle" is unique to them, I personally like offensive cars, chattering lifters, and gnarly shift kits. Maybe one day I'll grow up.

Youtube "Pontiac 068 cam", "Pontiac 2802", "Pontiac 744", etc. You'd be surprised, there are several videos of people showing off their idles and whatnot and it can give you an idea of the difference between how a cam behaves in a 400 vs. a 455...sound-wise.

If you're walking the line on compression I would be verrrrry careful with comp cams. They're great, I'm not trashing them or their reputation and lots of people love them. They do, however, produce a lot of cylinder pressure and utilize "quick ramp" theory. Not always the best option, if you're at the high end compression-wise I would go with a wider LSA....114 or so.

Since you've got a T-10 I would encourage you to check out the 744 Pontiac grind, or once again the Summit 2802...very similar. 744 should give you a little something more in the 455 but won't be quite as radical as the 041. It sounds pretty aggressive in a 400 but shouldn't be too obnoxious in a 455, and I believe there's a red Grand Prix with a 455 running the 744 on Youtube. I'm at work or I'd double check.

Good luck ;)

We really need more info of what you're after, goals? But from what I have gathered, you just want a more mild cam or characteristics. Somthing you might want to look into before you tear into the engine is switching to rhodes lifters with the same bullet cam. They bleed off some lift that will give you what you're after.
