I have never ran a transbrake. I am installing 1 in a PG with a stock pump for now. I have been told the stock pump will not hold up to a brake. I think different but would rather here from some of you. My theory is a stock pump pushing a rated psi should not go bad any faster than a race pump pushing a higher rated psi. Is this correct?

transbrake

I believe the stock pump is fine for the transmission, ie it won't blow up or destroy anything. However, transbrake valvebodies are always full manual and tend to run MUCH higher line pressure which can be detrimental to certain components, in the hydramatic trans something like the sprag is more easily destroyed.

The big reason to have a high volume pump is that to instantly apply both forward and reverse gears requires a large amount of fluid volume which the stock pump cannot supply. You may have rocking in either direction due to one gear being applied before the other, makes it hard to really stage correctly.

Also, make sure to have a big trans cooler as stalling against the transbrake builds a tremendous amount of heat in the fluid, something on the order of a 10-15 degree temp rise every second on the brake at WOT.

Good luck with your build,
Andy

without a proper pump setup the transbrake can burn up the tranny fairly quickly if pressure is low. Usually the car will back up since the low band cannot hold.

I would suggest a billet dual sealing ring servo piston on the band if you run a trans brake.

When the trans brake is activated there is a sudden large demand put onto the pump.

Most trans brakes require a passage or 2 that need to be opened up for better flow to the low / reverse clutch pack & also for the release when the trans brake is deactivated during the launch
