Quadrajet E4MC - CCC system

Dear friends,

I have this CCC E4MC quadrajet on my Olds 307 and while I was disassembling it, the Solenoid Adjuting Screw (226-see diagram) did not turn and never came out too. So I took it to a lathe shop and after many attempts, he finally managed to pull it out. To our horror, it was flattened at the bottom and pushed in, damaging the threads!!

So what we did was re-tapping the hole with threads and getting a suitable bolt that fits to it. Now by turning that threaded bolt, I expect to adjust the solenoid movement limits.

Now my question is this. Before assembling the top (air horn), I would like to know whether the screw I have found has the correct length so that it allows the full displacement for the solenoid plunger. Simply put, I would like to know the minimum to maximum movement allowed by the screw for the solenoid's plunger. (see last two photos in max-min positions)

Hi,

Thank you for the Delco manual link.

What the Delco manual says:

If solenoid plunger travel was incorrect when checked before
disassembly or if tampering is suspectedm the lean mixture screw
must be reset. Refer to vehicle manufacturer's service manual or "D"
section of Delco Carburetor Manual (9X) for specifications.


And this section isn't there on this PDF.


What the vehicle's service manual says:

3. Hold the solenoid plunger down. Turn the solenoid adjusting screw
(226) in or out, until plunger contacts both the solenoid stop and gage*.

Note T handle position.

4. Turn screw inward, counting turns to bottom solenoid.

*gage = J-33815-1 or BT-8253-A Mixture controls solenoid gaging tool


This gage tool is nowhere to be found. Even a template. :(

Wow! That takes me back! I used to be on the lookout for carbs that had the adjustment plugs removed and not reinstalled. If someone jacked with them and didn't know enough to put the plugs back in after repairs, they were certainly out of adjustment. The plugs keep the adjustment screws from turning.


Not sure how you are going to keep your new screw from turning out of adjustment from the solenoid action.

The piece appearing along side the screw (and the screw itself) in the photo with the hand does not belong. Upper movement of the solenoid plunger (rich stop) is controlled by an adjustable stop located in the underside of the carb cover. See figure 35 in the manual that RWENUTS posted the link to.

But to specifically answer your question, the plunger travel is set to 4/32" as measured through a vent hole with the carb top installed. But first the lean stop is set with a specific gauge sitting on top of a primary jet.

:confused: Oops...This is not something I anticipated. Does the original solenoid adjusting screw get any extra support to hold it from going out of adjustment from solenoid action, apart from those threads down the cavity?
