Rear end alignment

I start by centering the rear end in relation to the frame rails. Then make sure the rear end is exactly perpendicular to the frame front to back (zero thrust angle). Then adjust the front axle laterally so it is on the same centerline as the rear axle, and finally make sure the distance is the same between the front and rear axle center hubs on both sides. This will pretty much get you in the ball park for having axles that are parallel to each other, centered to each other, and pretty square to the frame. Check your front end alignment (camber, caster, toe) and if you've made significant adjustments in the alignment, check all of the above again.

Of course, if the frame is bent (or you suspect it is bent), then that frame is not a good reference to start with. In that case I might try to get the car on one of the more modern alignment machines and get a read out of the geometry of the front and rear axles for starters.
