Hey Gang,
My 72 Camino has a charcoal canister that I want to remove. It has three hose's that attach to it .On goes to the to the front carburetor vacuum port. One goes to the PCV port on the valve cover. And one goes to the gas tank ( I believe it is to vent the tank) I did try to remove the canister once. I plugged of the carb vac port, took the plastic tee out of the hose going to the PCV port ( I ran the other part of the tee to the back of the carb) And plugged off the hose that ran to the Gas tank. That is where the problem started. Since the tank was no longer vented ( I'm guessing), the fuel pump could not pull the gas to the engine....engine no go!

My question is...If I use a gas cap from a earlier Chevy ( the caps were vented)
will this cure the problem? Or is there more to removing the charcoal canister than that..... If so how do I do it correctly?..............jerry

The line that goes to the tank is the actual vent. An open fuel cap may not vent unless the small vent tube is next to the gas filler tube.

Either change to a '71 setup (or whatever year GM didn't use EVAP) or keep the vent line open by inserting some type of small air filter into the line (such as a rear end housing vent).

Jinx,

If I read your previous attempt correctly, you were applying vacuum directly to the tank. With the engine pulling vacuum and the fuel pump pulling fuel, I'm surprised you didn't collapse the tank.

I agree tm454, but if you're intent on doing this, have you tried just removing the other two lines to the cannister?

AND WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH A RED RAG???

okay i'll stop yelling. i have a 72 with the same thing. i'm just gonna leave it on my inner fender. its a strange set up no doubt. and it's kinda stupid to have a black coffee can under the hood. might be a good place to cook a burrito. also, some of those little rear end vents have a check ball in them so it would be sucked in and wouldnt work if you use it.
