Saginaw 4 speed - cluster gear - end plate with spring?

Hi, need help from Saginaw experts please.

I am rebuilding a Saggy 4sp from parts .. and so on .. I now have collected 3x in parts.
My question is .. one of the good cluster gears have this flex plate with springs .. and the other 2 does not.
1. Is this needed?
2. What is the purpose?
3. Was it added later years to help with xyz ???

that thing was to quiet gear clatter in neutral. you can remove it

agreed 100%. GM Also did it on some Muncie M20s. We would grind/chisel the rivets off and remove the plate, and the underlying springs. Its the springs that are the mild concern. If they wear out and come apart, that spring steel COULD really tear up a gear or 2.
