sbc identification numbers ?

Hey guys.. Gotta huge little question building a 68 c10 pulled what I believes a 283 but the block numbers telling me its a 327 .. the drivers side block number in the back is 39710010. Can anyone get any information on it ? I do have the. Other block numbers but there not on my ill finish my post later thanks ...

68 C-10, You have neither a 283 or 327, you have a 350. I have seen hundreds of these and we call them around here the 010 block. This is the good block for engine building. I also have an 1970 010 block in my 1984 C-10. Hope is is a pleasant surprise, I think it is. C-10'S ROCK with the 010 block.

U sure the block number isn't 3970010? Mortec and google didn't have anything for 3971001

If it is 3970010 then all u know is that it has a 4" bore

3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro

Depending on the stroke will tell you your displacement. the 350 received a 3.48" stroke, a 327 received a 3.25" stroke, and the 302 got a 3" stroke.

Thanks to both of you.. Yes its the 3970010 I'm typing off my phone.. When I get home ill post the other numbers.. I pulled the motor out because a friend gave me a 327 out of a 68 SS camaro but so far the block numbers don't match anything that I've found either waythanks again.

Get the date code from back by the distributor and the suffix from the right front of the block. Those will usually tell you what you need to know- unless someone's swapped the crank in it.

Could be anything from a 302 to a 350 if OEM cranks are used, most anything is possible up to ~400 cid w/aftermarket cranks in the -010 block.

Ok contining with the numbers from the motor I thought was a 283 .. First set is 12643265. And f0525ctl. Can anyone finish the pieces to the puzzle ? And for the next one the supposed 327 out of the camaro 3903852 next to distributor on drivers side.. I double checked the numbers so they should be right .. And as far as the SS part goes it sounded fishy I k ow the 327s a good motor but I don't know why itd be in an SS I agree..

You already know it's a 4" bore block by the casting number being 010. The CTL is:

CTL 1970 350 300 4 4 spd trans.
CTL 1972 350 165 2 tur hydramatic
CTL 1978 305 145 2 LG3, a/t
CTL 1975 400 175 4 LT4

So, the options are for it being a 350 from either 1970 (check for a pilot bearing in the crankshaft- not iron clad that it is a '70 because of this, but evidence), or from 1972. A check of the date code back by the distributor will tell you the year anyway.

And for the next one the supposed 327 out of the camaro 3903852 next to distributor on drivers side.. I double checked the numbers so they should be right
Well, almost right. They're prolly 3903352 (very easy to mistake a 3 for an 8 or vice versa), this is for a 327 from 1967. It will have a small journal forged crank.

The last number, "2", means (in your case) 1972. The "E" is May, 8 is the day, so May 8, 1972 is when the block was cast.

From the earlier poking around, you now know the engine was originally a 350 cid, 165 HP, AT-equipped w/a 2-barrel carb.

Good engine to build, in any event.

That's very good to know.. But what makes it a good motor to build? Besides the fact that its a 350 and bigger cubes... My goal for the truck is a street rod that turns. A good number I know the 327 is a little more nostalgic and I could get close to 400 HP fairly easy.... Being that there both good motors would it just be a toss up between the two ?

I stopped you there because "truck" is the operative word in this circumstance, IMHO.

Because of the weight involved, to "turn a good number" will require as much TORQUE as possible.

All else being equal, the 350 will out torque the 327. It's really nothing more complicated than that.

I second this. 327s build power higher in the rpm band due to the shorter stroke. So if you have a heavy vehicle you will need a motor that will put out low rpm torque to get that initial movement from the vehicle. Sure a 327 will work. Will it work well, no but if your dead set on it do it. Were just saying its gonna be a slug. I would consider even a 383 to get as much torque out of it as possible.

Defininately agree I like being different .. I kinds want to save the 327 for something special like a car anyway .. Its just everybody puts 350s in and Almost everybody and there mother have 383s now .. Illl just have to think about it .. You guys should look up Mr Chevy on youtube.com Its a 55 Chevy and I know its not that light either .. But it is a car tho to .. Anyone know a good stroker motor besides the 383 ?

Car Craft (*ugh*) recently did a build up of a SBC 4" bore 4-bolt block that they stuffed a 4" stroke crank into. Comes out to around 408 cid @ 0.030" over. Personally, I wouldn't do it- but the option exists.

You can stroke anything- take a 400 and stuff it w/a 4" crank and get a 427 w/a std. bore.

Ok guys I got another one I know its a 358 87-95. But I was hopin to get a little more info on it. The numbers are GM 5.7 lg sgi. ... A249. .... 14093638. ... Thanks in advance ... Just looking for a closer year for parts and what ever else you can find
