I found a efi kit for 1900.00.... the complete kit..fuel pump etc as well... should I jump on it? Im pretty sure itll be totally worth it in the long run...

My engine builder says I have to change to a efi camshaft because the xr288hr is too big... not sure if he changed the lsa of the cam or not...

So what do you guys think?? Go ahead and get efi now instead of waiting down the road and upgrading later from the quick fuel carburetor

the electronic fuel injection kit is going on a 1957 Chevy truck. I just got off the phone with someone from easy electronic fuel injection and they said that I could run the camshaft I had chosen with their kit. I was lookin for the best overall package and comfort as well and simplicity. Im not a carburetor specialist by no means... he actually said I would make more power with the fuel injection than the carburetor.

Before I jumped on that I would jump on this Chevrolet Complete MPFI System . I am running their tbi system on my boat and couldn't be happier with it. The systems use gm sensors and gm ecm's so everything is readily available at any parts store. Their mpfi systems are batch fire instead of sequential fire but still a better system than the fast tbi kit.

I really doubt your gonna gain anything going from a properly tuned carb to a tbi system except a lighter wallet. Going from a carb to a mpfi system you'll probably see a little better throttle response along with more even fuel distribution but again probably not more power over a properly tuned carb and distributor.

If you decide on the fast efi find out if the kit offers ignition control. No point in having efi if it doesn't control the timing also.

What transmission are you running?

Oh, so this is a brand new never ran vehicle? If you have to buy a new carb and distributor your pretty much at the same price as a tbi kit from affordable fuel injection. There is also Howell efi but they are a little pricier than afi. If you decide to run an electronic transmission you should talk to fast efi or whatever way you decide to go about running the trans with the ecm. I know afi can do it.

I don't want it to sound like I'm promoting afi, it's just the company that I went through for my efi system and am very happy with it.

Okay, just read a little bit about the fast system your looking at. I don't think the system has ignition control which is one of the major benefits of efi. Unless you can get fast to tell you the particular system your looking at has ignition control I would definitely pass on it. They may offer kits with ignition control though. It's still pricey for just a tbi system. I also read that the fast kits use a lot of the stock gm sensors which is a plus but the ecm might be pricey if it ever needs replaced (check warranties).

How much power are you planning to make? What type heads are you running. If Vortec heads, the Ramjet EFI is the way to go.If you don't buy the POS mefi controller, you can do it for less than $1900.The mefi controller is not accessable for tuning except by a very few places & can't run an E trans.Use a 0411 GM controller to run it & your transmission.Once you get your injectors sized rite for your app & your tune dialed in,you're thru.No more fiddling or messing around. It can make just as much power as a carb & be a lot more dependable. You can also use the 96 to 99 black box PCM,but, the 0411 offers a lot more tuning options. If I were gonna buy an EFI system,i'd go MPFI vs TBI.

. Are you planning a 383" with Profiler or AFR(more $$$) heads?

. HR288 (236/242) is a big cam for a '57 truck... are you aiming more for strip use than street... back in Feb. you said street use only... torque... which would be about an XE262 or XE 268 cam... or XR262/268 in roller cams (~$600 more)... or smallest Thumpr cam if you love the sound...

. Can prolly find a nice used 650-700-750 carb. for around $150... (800, 850 too big for pure street use, unless get a steal on it)

. Good MPG will depend mainly on having decent high compression ratio (~10.5:1) and good quench effect (.035"-.045" piston-head clearance)... not going too big on cam...

. 4L60e tranny is the electronic computer shifted version of the 700-R4 tranny...

Yea I told him imma keep the carburetor and go efi later down the road... u think the xr288hr will do more harm then good? I was only using it more as a weekend toy or a drive at night on the highway.... I was even considering sticking the th350 back in after a rebuild.. I know the th350 will keep the rpms where the cam likes it

You know, at the 4th car show, they had a 350 with the edelbrock rolling thunder cam. It sounded real good, only the slightest hint of cam idle. Probably the best daily driver or cruise night cam I heard in a long time. Very mild though, a good grind.

Made 2" less vacuum than a performer build, but had about 30-40 more hp. Similar manners otherwise.

Yep,you are in TH400 or 4L80E territory. You can spend a fortune on 700R4/TH350's fixing them when they break. Then you get tired & end up going to the 400/4L80E in the end,so,go ahead & do it now to save yourself the money, work,& downtime. They can be built to handle it,but, there will always be something. That much HP/tOrque is just beyond their design limits to handle reliably.

By the time you buy a built 700R/4L60E or have it built for that kinda power, you could buy a new 4L80E that would hold up better, not, counting subsequent repairs/rebuilds when the other breaks. Then after you've set crossmembers, wiring, new driveshaft, etc for the 700/4L60nyou'll to change it all if you decide to go to the 4L80.It will be cheaper, easier,a lot less trouble to just do it upfront. The 4L80E will use a lil more power, but, the gearspread will more than make up for it.If this is a new build, now would be the time to do it.
