Contact Bruce at Randy's Ring & Pinion extention 5517 and ask him if they have anything. If anything is available he should know about it.

 

There used to be Detroit lockers for this rear end. You might find something in good shape used. These were often 4.10 and 4.56 ratio, though. Is that what you have?

Anyway, you are looking for diff/gears/etc. for a Eaton HO52 rear end. It has a 10-bolt round removable rear cover and a Hotchkiss-type removable carrier.

BTW, the 12 bolt cover rear end was probably a Dana 60.

All Dana 60's have a 10 bolt rear cover..

 

Thank's cobalt327, I just looked up the HO52 and the case, and the bolt patern are a little diferent. Will try to upload pict. of it, and mine. Im still thinking it could be a 55T but?

 

I had written down 55T and 55P but got sidetracked. The 3707340 casting number comes back as a mid-50s to mid=60s 1/2 ton truck but there seems to be no consensus on the exact type but last night before I posted I saw 55T mentioned as often as any.

But regardless, you aren't going to find new production diffs. There are the usual suspects (Ricks, etc.) that you van contact or beat the bushes for a used 3.38:1 rear end to swap into it.

D 1 = letters followed by numbers are usually associated w/the date. Could be April 1st. or April of a year ending in 1, in your case it would be 1961.

There should be a ratio code on it. 3.90 was popular, MA or MD=3.90 ratio for 1/2 ton non posi; MB or ME= 3.38 ratio. Don't know if the same codes were used throughout the production run or what other codes might have been used.

To be honest I don't think I've seen a posi for that diff.

There was a LSD option available. MC or MF 3.90 w/limited slip.

 

62 chevt rear

I looked all over the differential and finally found some #'s. My eye sight is not what it used to be. Hear are the #''s 3707340 and a circle with somthing in it and D 1. The circle and the D 1 are in the row by themself. I hope this can help me identify differential. thanks againe for all and any help.

 

That is NOT a HO/52 or HO72 rear diff. Is your diff a 62 1/2 ton? 5 or 6 lugs axles?

I think your on the right track for the GM55T also know as HO33 or HO35. To be honest I don't think I've seen a posi for that diff. There's not a whole lot of ratio option's either.

 

Next time I'm out to the shop I will check my Chevy truck factory manuals to see what they may have in the way of the exact diff name.

I want to thank every one for the help, I just took off the bed, sides,fenders, and I am starting to strip, and have sand blasted, so I'm not in big hurry to work on differential. I think I will give this a rest for now,and maby a swap would be the way to go. But if anyone is near N. E. Indiana and has somthing let me know, I always forget to hit the thank button, so thank's to everyone

 

Looks like a nice project! If your unhappy with the diff you have you could do some searching for a Dana 44. The 44 was used in those early years also and you'd have a lot more aftermarket support.
