Help me guys!! Turbo 350.Just put my new motor in and was sooooo proud. Built it myself, first time. started right up, no leaks everything went perfect. Now I put it into gear to adjust the idle and NOTHING!!! Checked the shifter cable. It's shifting through all gears. Put it in park the truck won't move, wheels locked. that's good. Put it in any other gear the truck will roll, NOT GOOD!! I thought I had the converter in all the way! Do you guys think the converter isn't in all the way? Now the big question.........Drum roll please, Will I have to pull the motor to do this?I can't get to the top trans bolts to just drop the trans. It's in a S10 and it's close. Please chime in guys!!! Thanks in advance.

The tranny was known to be good?

There should have been space between the torque converter and a line made across the face of the tranny bellhousing before putting the tranny and engine together. There also should have been space between the torque converter and flexplate when the tranny was placed against the rear of the block, and should not have required using the bolts to pull the tranny up- if it did, there could be trouble.

Park is mechanical, really has no bearing on the tranny condition per se. No roll does tell you the diff hasn't totally gone out. It should roll if it's not in Park w/engine off. If it's rolling w/the engine running, there's obviously no engagement.

Double check the ATF level (engine running, in Park after rowing through the gears), be sure the dipstick/DS tube is correct, make sure the converter bolts to flexplate are in.

I often will pull the engine and transmission as a unit anyway. Six of one, a half dozen of the other as to which way is easier to do, IMO.

Tommer2 .. here in the trans -rearend forum we do not use HELP!! in thread titles , these guys are very helpful ... I edited the thread title.

How many quarts of fluid was installed into this trans? As pointed out , the fluid level is important

Have you checked for pressure? With a pressure gauge or un hook a cooler line for flow check.

Was the converter installed fully into the trans when the engine was bolted up? Did you perhaps have the converter bolted to the flex plate first, then install the trans onto the engine?

An easy way to check for clearance is to take a 3/16" socket and slide it between the TQ and Flexplate. Sounds to me like you didn't seat the TQ fully. Try grabbing it, does it wiggle front-back? If so, you need to re-seat it. Should have no forward-back play. If that doesnt work, check your ATF Levels. My 350 (72" from a C10 no overdrive) used 6.5qts of ATF after installing a shiftkit, no fluid was in the trans. Could also be the floats, but thats the last thing I'd look at, as that involves dropping the pan...
