Ok need help, I got he trans in, its working(better than before) but not shifting into 2nd and theres no reverse. when i rebuilt it I did all the mods on the th400 build tips thread.
any body got any ideas?

I am wondering about if I messed up the center support set screw mod, maybe, I put the set screw on the wrong side, or just shouldnt have done that one.

ok I re read the th400 build tips I didnt do all the mods there but after reading it again am more convinced that the set screw is probably going to come out.

even though it wouldnt shift it felt pretty nice to be able to drive it down the road

This post won't help you fix the problem, it's just a pat on the back for having a healthy outlook on things.

A positive attitude is an important part of most successful projects. It's great that instead of pissing and moaning, you're able to see a positive side to this situation.

Good luck.

I'm going under to drop the pan, and valve body, remove the set screw and hopefully go for a long drive after reassembly.

You installed a set screw into the case at the center support area?

Did you install this into the center hole in place of the bolt that has a hole the length of the bolt?

in jakeshoes website he has an article that tells how to direct feed the drum, by removeing the sealing ring and installing a set screw in the hole to the right of the center support screw.

I just removed the trans pan and I see that I must have been smokin crack because I didnt tighten the bolts on the rear servo, I AM GUESSING THAT WOULD PROBABLY CAUSE A LITTLE PROBLEM.

but before I remove the valve body and have to figure out how to get the check balls to stay in place for reassembly, if the seal is taken out of the center support and I unplug that whole will it still work, or should I just leave that alone and just tighten down the rear servo and put it back together.

loose servo cover is a problem.

With the 2nd from top sealing ring on the center support out , the hole should be plugged.

In the separator plate for the v-body.. there is a small hole (1/16 inch diameter) . When you hold the plate up to the case , that small hole is located over the case hole that needs to be plugged. Many ways to plug the oil passage, set screw in center support , set screw in the case, cup plug in the case.. you get the idea

If I remember correctly, you can get the check balls to stay in place with a dab of Vaseline. Been a long time since I put a shift kit in but I think that was in the instructions with the B&M kit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. :mwink:

I think I might be good, I fixed my goof up, left the plug in.
I ran it through the gears, went for a short drive and I got reverse and second gear now, didnt get fast enough for 3rd (i hope).
looks a little low on fluid also so didnt go to far.
I'm not sure if I should trust my dipstick, just droping the pan for a service they day is a little more than 4 qourts, I put 4 qaurts back in it, (I have a shallow trans pan.
Any body got a a fluid fill recomendation to be sure its right or atleast close?
its 1:45 a.m so I going to bed

With the trans cold engine running in park, fill it till it's at least to the add mark, no more. Then go drive till it's up to operating temp for a while, then do the next procedure.

With the trans hot engine running in park, fill it so the level is between the add and full marks. It's not absolutely necessary to fill to the full mark.

I believe that it's more a case of "burning the midnight oil" than "smokin' crack"

I've done that "I'll just work until I finish this" -- which often results in one of two things:
1.) if it went well ... another task / extension
(Hey, I'm on a roll!)
OR
2.) if it didn't go well ... dogged determination to do it right.

At times I just gave in to the exaspiration (insert cuss words here) and went to bed, fretting and rolling ...
I's amazing how somehow ... it seems to make more sense when you get back to it the next day.

But hey ... like Cobalt327 said, I have to admire your spirit.

Yea ironically before i was about to put the trans in had it all together ready to go, and since I had done a little here and a little there, I was afraid I might have forgotten something so I put it back on the bench tour it down then put it back together again, then installed it in the car I was up till 8:00 in the morning, so I so maybe that why I forgot to tighten the servo bolts.

improvement but still not right

ok I made improvements, but still not working correctly. I shift into reverse and it kinda sets there and fades into reverse, I have a good solid 1st and 2nd and on my short test drive today I had 3rd but on the way back it seemed to fade away and stoped shifting into 3rd for some reason. and reverse is there but like said it takes a minute to decide to do it,when I got back from the test drive I checked the fluid and it was barly on the stick, so I know I need to put some more fluid in it.
any ideas, is it just low on fluid or does it sound like something else?
