t-400 on a 305 sbc?

I am building a street rod that has a 1974 305 SBC. Through a series of trades, I wound up with a t-400 as the transmission. My problem is that the t-400 torque converter will not fit the bolt pattern of the 305 flex plate. Will a t-350 torque converter work with the t-400??? If so what if anything will be affected?

If this is going into a street rod,you want to use a 350 converter. It's a 12'' unit compared to the 13''400 converter. It will give you a little more stall compared to the 400,which you will want.In that light car,it will bang pretty good when you put it in gear with a big converter. The 350 converter, with it's extra stall, will soften the initial P to R and P to D hit, which will make it more comfortable. An 11'' converter would be perfect,if your budget allows.

I personally wouldn't use a 400 on a 305. the 400 takes to much power compared to a 350. Your 305 doesn't produce that much power to give away an additional 10hp just to turn the tranny. Those 400 would be used on big block vehicles mostly because of their strength. Even if you had a high performance 305, with all the goodies, the 400 is not the right one. If you want to get the most out of a ho 305, use lower rear gears in the rear, and 200-4r tranny with its lower first gear and evenly spaced 2nd gear and 3rd gear. Then you would still have overdrive for the highway. You could run 4.11 gears and still have equal to 2.75 rear because of the overdrive. That way that small cubic inch motor could use gear ratios to compete with more powerful cars.

My 305 is just mildly warmed over. I am building this car for my grandson, and I want it to look like a hot rod, sound like a hot rod but be economical to drive. I have built the high horse power engines before and 7 mpg isn't much fun at to days gas prices. I want him to be able to drive it, " a lot "

This is an open wheel, open motor car and should only weigh in at around l, 400 lbs. or less gvw. I thought that a 305 should carry it nicely.
