Hello there
I am in need of some assistance.... I have a th350 paired up to a 305 in a 86 cutlass. I had the tranny rebuilt recently and afterwards it worked fine for about a week. The problem it is having is that in every gear other than park it moves forward in first gear and wont shift out of first even at wot it also has no reverse it goes forward in this gear as well i would be very grateful if any one could provide me with a good idea of where my problem may be. I have checked the following fluid level, Trans pan for shavings and chunks.

thanks blinky

Th350,

Ah the Th350s.

A few years back (actually many), I lost third gear, and reverse got sluggish, then reverse dissapeared, then I had first and second gear, that was it. I drove it for a week to work like that, and second dissapeared.

My problem lay inside. I am not technically sound on tranny terms, but the third band (I think if I remember right) had this little "plastic cup" that fluid would push against telling it when to shift. That plastic cup flopped around like a dying fish.

So I rebuilt the thing, and the rebuild kit didn't have this "cup", after some hunting a buddy of mine, who who rebuilds tranny's constantly for his stock car gave me a new cup, but this one wasn't plastic, it was metal, and I think, not 100% sure, it came out of a BM shift rebuild kit. But I put it in, and boom worked great.

Later on I found out my ex, at the time had took it and dropped it in low and stomped the gas. That will brake that little "cup" and stop the tranny from shifting.

I don't know or remember the technical name, I have tech guides somewhere out in the garage to retain that info for me, but some one on here may know. But that was what was wrong on mine, when I lost reverse and such.

Good luck.

I just had a detailed conversation with a transmission specialist today so some of the information he gave me is fresh in my head...

He told me that the 2nd gear band is the weak point on the TH350 and since you're not coming out of 1st you maybe experiencing the issue he mentioned to me. I'm not a transmission expert by any means, though. I'm just passing the word...

hi,

to correct previous posts with answers ;

2nd gear and 3rd gears are not bands in the t-350 trans.

Blinky: If ..... as I read your post the trans tries to move forward in reverse (?) gear, this means you have serious problems or the shift linkage is flopped loose inside the pan.

I'd pull the pan off to check items or take the trans back to the builder for proper warranty repair.

If that's the case then do you have any idea as to what the transmission mechanic I spoke to was referring to? Like I said I'm not a transmission expert by any means, but I do like to pick up knowledge anywhere I can...

I had the exact same issue with my rebuilt 350. My shift linkage came un done inside the tranny. I recommend dropping the pan and having a look inside where the linkage goes into the tranny. There should be a little "S" clip that connects the linkage to a little plunger type arm. I don't know the exact names but if that stuff isn't connected, you can move your shift lever all you want but the shifting in the tranny won't be happening. Everything will look connected and sweet from the outside.

Once I connected the little "S" clip and tightened the bolt that holds the gear in place I was golden.
