I would suspect your torque convertor was not installed properly - not deep enough. Unfortunately if you managed to seat the bell housing to the block, you may have damaged the front pump of the transmission.
Push the torque convertor towards the trans. while spining it clock wise, it should click or clunk a few times. You'll know when its set when you can't put your fingers between the t/q & the case. Just spin it all the way around 4 or 5 times while pushing in an listen for clunking sounds.
This guy at work told me that he bolted the torque converter to the flex plate then put the trans on. He said he had a tuff time bolted the trans to the engine then he heard a loud snap. I rolled my eyes about 3 times after hearing that.
That will do it. Time for PB&J. That pump is toast.
