I have a 468 chevy (4160lbs)
9.2 compression
allumium heads
373 posi
hurricane manifold
.555 .551 lift on cam

I'm trying to figure out what trans to get.
I have a power glide.
and my machinist is try to get me to go with 350turbo or a
700r4 .
I know the power glide is bullet proof so is it better then a
700 or 350?????

i need more tork and want to burn some rubber!!

it all depends on how much money you have to spend, a stock to lightly modified th400 will likely handle the 468. the powerglide is a great transmission and for all out drag racing is the way to go, but i dont like the PG on the road, it only has low and high gear. if you have the money and plan on running over a 3.42 rear gear(tire size plays a factor as well) then i would want to go after a well built 700R4 or a well built 2004R, both of these transmissions have an overdrive and make it easy to run 4.10 and higher gears but still be able to cruise on the highway

i see that you wrote 4160lbs, i would guess that this is the weight of the vehicle, and now i see that you are running a 3.73 gear. you can look up racing caculators to see what rpm you will be running based on the final gear in the trans, rearend ratio, and tire size, this would really be what i would make my decision based on.

PS: the lift on the cam is not really the most important information when trying to describe the cam, the duration @ .050 is much more important

You would have to put a few $ in a 700R for it to hold up to the hp..The 400's has been proved many time's that they can handle the Hp.. I'm not a trans Tec. But know what work's.. I have seen the right 350's take a good beaten from a big block too.. ;)

x2 what INTERIORS said. I'm using a T-400 in the Nova, blown 383, with the good frictions, a 34 element sprag, and manual valve body/shift kit. I beat it hard and never hurt it yet. That's with a 3200 converter, and of course an external cooler.

the th350 will likely need some beefing up as well, the th400 was what came stock with the BBC's. take a look at these.

this is the transmisson i have in my camaro, with a 530-540hp/ 505-510tq 385cid SBC, i've only had it in the car for a few months with a 3500-3800 stall, it bangs hard and true, i am happy with this trans

you can also take a look at this one

these guys are the most reasonable experiance 700R4 builders i have found, some others charge 3000.00 for a well built 700R4 but if you look at what products are used in both, you'll see they use the same parts.

but i think your decision should be made more based on what you intent for this vehicle is and what kind of RPM ranges you want to run

well i use it as a parts van once in a while
drag it around once a week to burn the cob webs out
have it at the track 2x a month

I just got the motor together top rpm i want to hit is 6.5 or 6.8
if i can see it .

I put a cam alum ,heads ,carb ,stall, roller rockers, arp rod etc.
havent really made it to the track yet
I have a stock bottom end so i really should'nt hit over 67rpm

Full roller, custom grind cam, methanol injection system jsut added, Desktop Dyno gives it 780 with 9 pounds, it's an 8-71 motor, two BG 750's, Dart Pro-1's.

Take that with a grain of salt.

It's street driven, raced it once and burned up 7 pistons, my own fault, I was aggressively playing with the devil, he won.

my87z - I know the 700R4 does not need the computer interface and will use a lockup converter, does the 200R4 need the computer system??
no, the 2004R doesn't, it was in most all 80's carb'd monte carlos

as far a weight diff, unless you're all about shedding weight and bracket racing what does that really matter.

th400: 1-2.48:1, 2-1.48:1, 3-1:1
th350: 1-2.52:1, 2-1.52:1, 3-1:1
2004r: 1-2.74:1, 2-1.57:1, 3-1:1, 4/od-0.75:1
700r4: 1-3.06:1, 2-1.625:1, 3-1:1, 4/od-0.70:1
PG: 1st gear varies from around 1.98:1 all the way to around 1.65:1, 2-1:1

the O/D transmissions get a bad rap cause they were made for smog cars, but think about how many 3rd and 4th gen camaros that run at the track with a very similar style trans, you may have to spend some extra money, but i'm a big fan of running the 700R4, with a set of gears it's murder out of the hole. but if i built a stictly race car i would go with a 400 or PG

If its an help to you, iI am using a TH400 right now behind my 454 but its getting replaced with a built 700r4 as soon as I get the money. Local shop will do it for about $700 (with me installing the trans of course).

3.06 first gear combined with a 454 and a 4.10 rear end, thats some off the line tire smokin' trailer pulling power.

The overdrive (when not towing, towing in OD is a no-no for a 700r4) will help the mileage of a 454 that has 4.10 gears behind it..

With my tires and that gear ratio, i figure in OD i'll be at 2500 rpm at 75mph. Not bad for a 454 really.
