What has happened to this board?

This used to be a cool place to get info about uncommon engine problems and how to fix them. Now it is degenerating into a "how much HP will I make?", "Where do I get water pump bolts?", etc. etc.

I have watched as some of the older members of the board have logged on and answered questions. Real guys with answers borne of experience from building engines and racing cars. Sadly, these guys don't post on here anymore. I hate to assume anything but I wonder if they just silently read the posts and just shake their heads in sadness as to what has happened to this board. Who could blame them?

Freak, you get it. I will concede the HP question issue to you. But you and I as well as most people here know you can find all kinds of magazine articles, websites, local rodders, etc. that basically provide the recipe with all ingredients listed to build an engine to any power level you desire! I'd rather see the posts from guys that actually try to follow these "recipes" or come up with their own "recipes" and tell us how they did or what problems they had.

Anybody can put the parts together. Follow a good shop manual's instructions and you can put an engine together. The real art is making the thing breathe fire and figuring out how to tune it and keep it tuned. Maybe I'm all wet on this and everybody can feel free to tell me that. I don't think many will. I hope that the majority feel the way I do and want this forum to get back to what it was and get rid of the silly *** crap that has been posted lately.

Yes there has been a lot of ridiculous questions and posts lately.
Most of it in the lounge that dosn't have anything to do with cars.
Which I feel like should be separate, so that it dosn't even show here. But that is just my opinion.

And some of the questions that are in the right places do sound ridiculous to the members that know the answers. But, if every one knew the answers, then we would be out of business, not just here, but in my shops to.

If you came to me for a haircut or to get your tv fixed, you would be in a world of hurt, because I don't know how to do those kind of things. If we flame the newbies for asking a seamanly dumb question, and run them all off, then pretty soon there would not be any board. We all had to go through the learning process to get here. Just as some of the new ones coming on here are. For some it is easy, some it is not, and for some it never will happen.
I've tried all my life to learn to play a guitar and my friend that can play can't understand why I can't learn how. But it just wasn't meant to be.

Most of those questions that seem dumb to me might not seem that way to other people, There is a lot of questions that I can't answer, so I just leave them for someone else.

Every thing has been going pretty smooth here lately, so lets try to keep it that way.

the freedom went to the ****** to live in peace with his husband and the citizens can drive with a check engine light on with out theyre car calling the state.

how long will it be before they outlaw bigblock and mandate hydrocarbon powered vehiccles anyways? ya kno.

inspire the children that are interested in this oldschool hotrod stuff, they will be what keeps it around.

I'll admit I've asked more questions than I've answered. But I've tried to ask intelligent questions - the answers to which I thought might benefit others. I haven't answered many questions because I'm fairly new to the sbc350 and '32 roadsters (being a Jeep fanatic for a while).

Its funny you should bring this up though. Just yesterday I was marvelling at the Internet, and this board. The information I've received here has been, and continues to be, invaluable. Had it not been for some of the help and information I've received from people here, I would be MUCH more frustrated, have spent too much money on the wrong parts, and be much less far along than I am now. I try to show my appreciation on every thread, almost on every post.

As to the stupid questions, I have two comments: 1) that means more new people are entering the sport, a good thing 2) I'm less and less suprised by the stupidity of the common man - get used to it! You think you have it bad here, you should check some of the 4x4 related threads. YIKES  At least it seems most folks here have opposable thumbs...

As far as the old timers no longer posting, maybe their arthritis is kicking in from the cold weather? Seriously though, I've noticed a clique-ish, better-than-thou mentality in a lot of the older guys. Some are friendly, but many are quite condescending if you aren't 60 years old. Not on this board, but in person. Maybe they are just getting too good for us.

At any rate, thanks again to everybody, and be patient with the idiots. That being said, I'm going to get an XXXL tshirt to support this board!

Pieces out!

I remember the time I had to ask, "how do you tighten wheel lug nuts?", " How does an automatic transmission work?", "How do I decide what compression to run?", "How do yo set ignition timing?", etc. They were dead serious questions and if I didn't get an answer, I would not be able to continue in the hobby. Ask Jon, when I started on this board I made every posting mistake imaginable!

I appreciate the honor of being asked 'simple' questions by a newbie and consider it a privilege to pass on what others gave freely and patiently to me. One thing I do here is point people asking common questions to the search engine, linking them to past threads so, a) members aren't constantly answering the same question and, b) the questioner gets the benefit of all of the informative previous discussion that may be missed in a duplicate new thread.

Even though I've been lurking here for awhile,
I have posted a Few answers,+ asked a couple of Questions.....
The only thing that burns me up at this board is the young fellas posting,

"I've got a 57 Chevy Nomad wagon, in Showroom condition, I'm building a new engine... I want to run a 283, factory heads, Hi-rise tunnel ram manifold, 2 1150cfm Dominator carbs, a .600" cam, forged domed 350 pistons, alu. 6" rods, + a forged 400 crank... How much Horsepower will it make,+ How Fast will it Go ??? would one of you PLease run this on Your Dyno ???"

In Reality, It's a 13 year old, thumbing thru a Jegs catalog, pulling his pud, Daydreaming, with No Clue that the parts he's pulling out of the Air, Won't Even Bolt-Up, Much less Run........
Doesn't own a Car, Doesn't Even Drive Yet....
Much less a $30,000.00 Collectors Dream.......
And, The Spelling isn't even Phonically Readable........ The Kid is just TOO Lazy to even use the Spell-Check on the post page.......

My Response Would be, Go Play with your Bicycle,+ Quit Wasting My Time.............

Any questions asked on this board are relevant to the person asking the question. Thats why this board exists. I remember going to the speed shop when I bought my first car and asking if I could put a 4 bbl carb on a 2 bbl intake and I knew more about cars than any of my friends. The guys at the speed shop explained to me the difference between carbs, intakes, cams etc. That how I learned. That and a lot of reading. With the internet it is easier to ask than to read but so be it. Thats the price for technology. The water pump questions and similar posts are a little bit of a pain in the *** but they are relevant questions to those asking. We can choose what questions we want to answer. If we don't answer then we run the risk of loosing those people because they will go elsewhere and they, like it or not, are why this board exist. If it was full of experts then no one would need to ask a question. I've responded to some pretty silly questions with what I thought was a reasonable answer and I learnt from other people responding to that same question but knew a little bit more than me. I think that some of the basic questions should be posted in the introduction or general sections but they tend not to get the same response. We can't push the new people out (and I mean new to this hobby not new to the board) as they are the people who are going to keep this hobby and sport alive.

This is one of the finer boards around, I have only been hanging out here a short while. There are some very bright guys here and usually no flames or sillyness. I am with the guys that want to help whoever I can, when ever I can. Some of the post are a joke, not only because the spelling is bad, but because it should not take two pages to figure out what water pump bolts fit a SBC (the most common engine on the planet). Sure he has a right to ask and that's how you learn, but at the same time, to me it seems like it would have been easier to measure the thickness of the pump (to get the length) find some bolt that fits the threads, and run to the hardware store and pick up a few. Then again you can open any catalog and order a set of bolts for the pump. That particular guy has asked a LOT of questions and doesn't seem to listen when advice is offered. I would have been more that happy to send him a set of spare water pump bolts I have, as far as that goes.

Thinking about it, a few of you said it very well, If you don't ask (or read) you won't learn. I would never want to run anyone off, I just wish some of the guys would take time yo ask detailed, well thought out questions. I don't know all the answers and I learned a lot the hard way.

I have seen some questions that make me chuckle, and some that make me wonder......but I have also learned a great deal from reading the posts here. What seems like a silly question to one person might keep others from making a big mistake, and so, with the exception of a few trolls, I have to say that most of the threads and questions here are legitimate.

From what I just got myself into I am going to have to ask lots of questions. I do a search but don't find exactly what I am looking for so they will be old news to you but to me answers will get me going in the right direction! like my 302 question this morning.. the Napa guy and another guy here in town said not to bore the engine past 20 over... well mine is 30 over so I thought I was screwed and had to start looking for a crate engine... you guys said different so now Im quite happy! Thanks! Jeff.

wierd postings

Steve Karsh, you are right on.
While to us more seasoned motorheads, some of these questions may seem embryoic at best, I would imagine that if all of us dusted off our hard drives and looked deep into our own documents files, we would find that when we were also novices in the great world of the all mghty hot rod (please genuflect to Henry Ford, Louis Chevrolet; et al), that we to probably asked what seemed to our mentor some pretty wierd and stupid questions. No doubt they answered them or you wouldnt be here now. Let us endeavor to wean our young so that they may carry on our traditions and knowledge to their own progeny. Let us not be the aborters of our own offspring.
Nuff Said.

I'm with Troy. Stop Flaming the newbies!!! Everyone has been at ground zero once. How are you going to learn if you don't ask questions.

How far would John Lingenfelter or Smokey Yunick have gotten if someone told them they were stupid every time they asked a question?

If you don't think someone deserves an answer simply don't post an answer. That's the fastest way to run a suspected troll off. No answers=No satisfaction and they will go away.

If some of you guys keep treating the newbies like trolls(which makes the ones doing the flaming trolls too!) people will stop asking questions for fear of being berated.

Play nice kids.:)

Does this mean I am irrelavent? Im fairly new and mainly read and sometimes ask. I believe in hands on learning but sometimes I just need to ask for advise like I did in a question I just posted recently. I think my question was a good one and not one typically asked but yet you havent replied to it cool rockin daddy maybe you should go over it and give some adivse?

Between work, family, my local draft board (and Vietnam) and foreign living, I took almost a 40 year break from serious wrenching. Now that I'm reaching geezerhood and have the time (and $$) to get back into it I discover that things have changed just a little bit. (Hey! The valves are in the heads, now!! :p )

This board is THE BEST on the net! I have gotten great tips from many, many folks or all ages and experiences. I know that some of my questions look pretty simple to some, but I'm really going to school here and I'm learning a lot.

Jon does a great job of keeping on top of all this. There is less flame and more useful responses than any other board I've found.

Further, It makes me feel really good when someone asks a simple enough question that I am able to offer some helpful advise.

My 2 cents worth....
