ok so im putting an ordinary small block in my car, i was thinking about which transmission i can use. im not really interested in automatic, and borg warner, muncie etc trannys are hard to come by in my area. what manual trannies can i hook up to the small block? i know this might sound like a dumb question to some but, i don't know the answer so i'll ask it, thats how we all learn

thx

Honestly

the tranny's I have seen lately in my area aer mostly toast and need a rebuild to be usable..which drives me to think tha tthe best deal would be go to jeg' or Summit and order out a new Richmond gear tranny..either the Super t-10 or the 5 speed would be my choice..

Comes new in a box and has the right bolt pattern and splines to bolt right up to a small block..

Money wise I think I fellow may be better off going that route..

You can use anything that will bolt up in this case..Just that we generally reccomend the stronger tranny's such as the Richmond or a Tremec..Some guys use a Saginaw as those came in chev monza..I think you will need an adapter to use the S-10 tranny..but then the guys who put sbc engines in S-10 pickups can help with that piece..

Since this is apparently a street car, probably your best, and least expensive, route would be a Saginaw 3 or 4-speed. There are a bzillion of them in junkyards. I recently sold a 3-speed for $35 and a 4-speed for $100.

What kind of car? Yeah a richmond unit form summit is good. They offer a 4 speed, a 4 speed w/overdrive, and a 6 speed. You can choose what first gear ratio you want too!
Where did you see a Richmond 4 speed w/overdrive? Their web site does not show it.

What's the story???

Chevy vegas and monzas are an easy find for wide ratio saginaw four speeds, this tranny will hold up if you don't abuse it much, the low first gear works well with freeway friendly rearend gears. The older chevy trucks used three speed saginaws and muncies as well as most 60's and 70's cars. Mid eighties chev trucks also had a 3speed+overdrive that was based on the old mopar 883 design that supposedly held up really well- this thans would also be a direct bolt on.
Personally I've got my sights set on a new Tremec TKO-600, hopefully it's as strong as they claim.

Just about any run of the mill manual transmission can be adapted from most of the mainline manufacturers to your Chevy engine.

There was mention of the Borg Warner T-5 out of an S-10, one of them behind a 4.3 liter V-6 will directly bolt up to your V-8, but don't bother looking at one behind the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder or the 2.8 V-6, it WON'T fit and isn't worth changing things to make it hold up to the power of a V-8 anyway.

awesome..i tried going into some s10 sites and looking for info about their trannies and they couldn't tell me anything. but if it will work i will run one of those, because i really don't want to run an automatic!

If you're looking into an S10 tranny, the 88-up 4.3l v6 trannies are the New venture 15-25-3500's. I have the 3500 in my truck, and it's been excelent. they bolt right up to a small-bigblock chev. fit the 168 tooth wheel and 12" clutch and stagger bolt starter. and are compatible with one or two piece seal engines.
The 3500's are also found in fullsize trucks, that's a small testament to they're strength as opposed to a BW T5
88-95, NV3500 use a hydraulic slave-fork-ball pivot.
96-up use an integral slave/throwout bearing.
I run a clutch for a 77 chev 4x4 4spd, that has matching splines, and the right bolt pattern for the early chev 168 flywheel.

My 5spd has lasted 3.5 years of abuse and missed 6grand 2nd gear shifts, and outlasted 2 diffs and 3 clutches.
I think they're pretty tough.
though I don't have much horsepower.

You could try V8S10.org as they put many smallblocks in front of S10 trannies.
Hope this helps man>

Given the choice of stuff you can find in junkyards now, I would have to agree that the New Venture Gear 3500 is a much better choice than the T-5.

It's not nearly adaptable as the T-5 to anything other than it's original vehicle type. Chevy will only fit a chevy engine, and Dodge will only fit a Dodge engine. You can't just swap the bellhousing on this transmission, as it is part of the main gear case also.

Here is where you'll find them.
Chevrolet/GMC C/K Full Size Trucks 2/4 WD 1988-96
Chevrolet/GMC S/T Compact Trucks 2/4 WD 1990-96
Dodge 1/2 - 1 Ton Trucks 2/4 WD 1994-96
