Why the attitude?

I saw American Hotrod for the first time last night, (actually the last 1/2hr) and was more than just a little disappointed with old Coddington himself. Yes he builds world class cars, but what a knob! I could never work for a guy like that for long. (I'd stay long enough to learn all his tricks, and then hopefully go on to build better) If thats what fame does to your head, I'd never want it. I see the same thing with Jesse James and Chip Foose. Its a shame really....Anyone else agree?

Totally. The dad (with the stupid looking mustache) that owns Orange County Choppers (American Chopper TV show) is a flaming idiot too.

I think its an act for the most part, they're trying to add Drama. I watched that gay Monster House show(for about 2 seconds), they do the same yelling at each other we have a deadline B.S. I only watch for the cars and bikes, the rest I can do without.

I dunno, when I saw them, they reminded me of the kinds of guys I work with. Most of us are ex military where pissy moods and a lot of yelling are the norm. My company specifically looks for those kind of hard driving take no s*** SOB leaders. Its expected from supervisors and auditors.
I saw an episode of American Chopper where this kid thought he'd suck up to his boss by making him a keychain. Bad move. Problem was, he didn't do it on his own time, and he used company resources to do it. I would've had to fire the poor kid. that sort of stuff isn't tolerated with government contracts using citizen's tax money, no matter how insignificant it may seem. At least that's the way it is down at my level. I can't say the same thing for the upper level executives though.

For some people, communication skills aren't as important as being intimidating.

Yes, they could get alot more accomplished if they communicate better, but from my chair, it's hilarious.

I think the world needs stupid people for the simple entertainment of others. Fortunately, TV producers feel the same way, otherwise, we'd never see them on screen.

Boyds an *******!
Id never buy a set of his rims after watching what a flaming fruit he is. I punch him in his boyds if he talked to me like that. LOL HG

There is a paradox here. I would assume a shop like Coddingtons or OC Choppers have people who actually enjoy building cars and bikes and get to exhibit a lot of creativity. Whereas in an airplane factory, after you've built hundreds of identical airplanes, and personal creativity is prohibited by Mil specs and FAA regulations, it gets very very boring and monotenous. Communication skills only get you so far in my environment. You can only communicate so many times to a guy that he's going to get fired if he continues to screw up sixty million dollar airplanes. After a while, it's "no more Mr. Nice Guy", because if I don't correct the situation, it will be my a** on the line.
So why Coddington and the OC Chopper guy act like they do is a bit puzzling. And of course, I'm sure a lot of it is just an act.

I'm proud to be the stupid people!

If you ever work with me and my dad, alot of that happens. He thinks by yelling i hear. its more of a frustration thing though, when you tell someone to do somthing, but leave out a part (escpecially when youre under a deadline, and you gotta hurry), you figure they know what your thinking, or they just wasnt paying attention, then you get upset when they do it a different way. its funny realy when you look at it. I kinda Paul senoirs (dad on OCC) mustach, dude looks like a sea lion!!!

I was disappointed watching the show. Thought there would be a lot more creativity but it appears it is mostly clean-up...fresh paint and crate engines.

I do know one thing though. Boyds first old lady being the company officer with the attitude she has...she would be the first one with a work boot implanted in her posterior. That woman has ugly and mean she hasn't even used yet... :pain:

Regarding OCC, I've met Paul. (a long time ago) He is a hardcore kinda guy, but he hams it up for the show. He made his bones years ago, not with bikes, with ornamental Iron, fencing, etc. The bike business was a hobby until just a few years ago. Paul Jr. is the fabricator. They build a few great customs, and assemble a lot of "custom" bikes with off the shelf parts. I'm not sure, but they sure seem to farm out most of the real finesse work, paint, polishing, engines, etc. I heard from someone that they will make 1 day personal appearances for $100K plus expenses. It's cheap to produce, so it's on the air.

I've meet Boyd several times around the ISCA shows, And he is what he seems. He has no talent, except to spend money and belittle people. His talent is all hired, He had to take bankruptcy a few years age, and I wonder how he stayed in business. Rumor has it around the show car circuit that he is just a figure head, and they pay him to use his name.

That sounds like half of the business owners I know. Some times the product/service will sell itself.

I didn't see all the episodes but I did get to see Brizio last night. I was kind of impressed. He seemed a normal sound thinking down to earth guy. And that him and his employees do the best job possible. No ranting and raving like a lunatic. A decent kind of fellow, that gives you a bang for your buck. Wow that's rare to see!

I saw the Brizio episode of Rides last night too. I love pre war rods, and I happen to be building a 29 roadster, so to see a 32 go together was pretty cool.
But how in the world did they get some goofy 90210 pretty boy to host this show?! If you remember the engine building part of the episode, Jason says ".... The cam must be placed in between the lobes of the crank."
WHAT?!

Okay, I can let that go. But I couldn't help but feel that the whole show was nothing more than a one hour Edelbrock commercial.

And Edelbrock pays some dude to screw shiny parts onto a GM ZZ4 350 shortblock... You would think he would know not to use assembly lube on a roller cam. And why wouldn't he degree that cam?

And somehow a dished piston motor with "E-tech" heads and a dual plane intake, edelbrock 650 carb (Carter AFB) MILD cam, small primary shorty tube headers and ho-hum ignition put out 435 horsepower. Ugh.

Still, I guess it's better than the other crap on TV

I noticed that too, but did you notice one of Edelbrock's daughters said, "Boy I love that air gap manifold" when the motor was on the dyno. That was no "air gap" manifold Jason installed. Oh well, she's just a girl.

Please don't hit me BBB.

I've got a couple of buddies that say the same thing Troy says about Coddington. I think if that was my exwife I'd be a bit off to one side also, she's a work of art! Scaaaaaary! I'm a little disappointed in the show, the guys are bondo artists, I thought there would be a lot more metal work going on. It's the same formula for all these shows, deadlines, butthead supervisors, glitches, dummies screwing up. I wonder how long it will last. Dan

Ever heard of reality T.V.?? ya Schmuck ;) J/K laugh would ya
Phew! I thought you were going to tell me those reality TV shows weren't real either. That would have really burst my bubble.:p

The only decent guy doing any kind of automotive work is the gent that does the show "Trucks". He seems to be the only "normal" rodder on TV.

LOL

Ya, staci from trucks is awesome (Loved the Willys), but when they changed the girl made me upset, the other girl had more, uh, i guess youd call it passion. joe and elmer from horsepower tv are cool but run from a script, and its cheesy.

Trucks is a show i really enjoy and it's because of Staci. i like American Choppers too but am sick of Sr. barking at everyone. who needs that crap? did you guys see the episode of Trucks where Staci was field testing the Crazy Horse bronco and drenched one camera-man and slid and bonked into another? that was pretty funny. great show, makes me wish i still had my old truck. no flaming super-egos on that show.

Brizio was great

I really enjoyed the Brizio Rides show. He is a real hotrodder. I could overlook the cam between the lobes thing because of the things that Roy said. Like: when he said they never make mistakes while hes filing down a finished part. Or the comment he made about not wanting to set the hinge pins. (How many times have you nicked the paint doing just that?) And I loved when they dropped the piece of metal behind the Edelbrook Daughter when she was revving up the motor on the dino.
Yea... I liked the show.

I meet Coddington a few years ago and thought then that he was a jerk, then there was the deal when he took the wheel business public and I heard not first hand that he dumped his stock and went bankrupt or something, that is why it is now B.Coddington garage and not Boyds as it was before. They could have picked any of the other great builders out there for this show and I would have watched, but not with that jerk on the show. This is strictly my opinion and my 0.02 worth.

yea, the Crazy Horse test was pretty good. on the highway he lost his power steering belt which the cameras caught. he needed to address the oil pan which allowed all the oil to slosh forward when he came down a steep hill so he had to shut it down and coast. he said next time he'll install the heater before going on a cruise and also noted the bronco was very thirsty! other then that he had a blast with it and nothing broke. good show. it's nice to see projects built-up and used in the real world.
