Good race quality bars are SPS-245, factory ones are typically plain high carbon steel.

 

Any idea where to purchase that? Im planning on making sway bars for this porsche 911 i just picked up.

 

I would think there would be zillions of quality sway bars in every shape and use for the 911. Why would you want make one? Just curious.

 

well the front sway bar is just straight across with a a little machine work on the end for the arm to bolt on and clamp the it tight to the bar itself. its really simple to make and would prolly cost an 8th of the price. obviously a more technical sway bar with bends etc would be easier and better to buy but this seems simple enough.

Your best bet would be to purchase SPS 245 in RC 45 condition and anneal it yourself (after machining) to the hardness you require, you will have to machine it with a carbide tool however...it's tough stuff. It is available from most specialty steel providers, check your yellow book for a supplier.

I assume you have a machine shop and a long enough heat treating furnace at your disposal and know how to make the calculations regarding torsional stiffness in relation to material diameter and rockwell hardness? Be prepared for sticker shock when you see the price of this stuff.

The other alternative is to forge your own high carbon steel bars from solid, you will need a 100 ton drop press plus dies and a furnace to preheat.

Them aftermarket bars look real cheap now don't they.

 

I don't know, unless you just want the feeling of acomplishment, I don't see any savings. Not if you want to "pay yourself" more than a buck an hour.

Remember, the design of that bar, the length of the arms, the "springyness" (sorry I have no idea what the term would properly be called) where the link is connected to control arm and other factors all come into play when designing such an item.

I would think the zillions of hours spent by others over the 40 years of the 911 there would be much better stuff available. All at only pennys more if you count all your time.
