Does anybody know of a cheaper priced set of headers for a ZZ4? I need block hugger style for my 48 Chev sedan with a Mll. I noticed Summit has some cheap block huggers but I dont think they will work with angle plug heads. Thanks.

Unfortunately for you....block huggers and angle plug heads don't really go together. You might try Skip White Auto, they are on Ebay all the time and sell some very nice looking tig welded stainless steel header with a 3/8 steel flange. They are working on a set that will accomodate angle plug heads.....so they say. (423) 722-5152

Cheap headers will cause you more grief than you probably want to deal with IMO. I have a GMPP Fastburn crate engine with block hugger headers in my 34. I searched for a "cheaper" alternative to the Sanderson headers I currently have. I was up against several factors. angle plug heads, "D" port heads, and close fitting in the chassis. The only header I found that satisfied these requirements was the Sanderson. I gritted my teeth and forked the money over. These headers have been on my car for almost 4 years now with no leaks and they still look new. I bought the ceramic coated headers and have never regretted spending the bucks for quality.

Any block hugger header is going to be close with angle plug heads. I have had to cut down a plug socket and use a 3/4" wrench to get to several of my spark plugs.

There are special angle plug block huggers. They seem to work OK. I have a cheap pair (from a swap meet of years ago) on my wife's Vette. I have found the secret to long term success with any kind of headers is to use good fasteners (I use stage 8s, for the lockability[is that a word?]) and good gaskets. I suffered leaks time after time on this old Corvette. And after buying several sets of gaskets, trying conciencously to retorque frequently, and still blowing out gaskets, I "stepped up" and got the Stage 8 fasteners and copper gaskets. Done deal. I do have a "special" spark plug socket like Vince mentions, but I only need to use it on straight plug heads where the headers don't clear well enough.

I forgot to mention, that I used the dead soft solid copper gaskets and they have been in place since I installed the headers without leaks. This is the first set of headers I have owned that did not require frequent gasket replacement.

I know they are pricey but I have a set of ceramic coated Sanderson #CC5 on my '32 that are somewhat of a duplicate to the OEM Vette tubes that F-Bird shows....but in more of a block hugger design. I paid $325 shipped from a guy who "gets a deal" from Sanderson. PM me if you are interested.....Dave

one other suggestion, take a look at a Summit catalog page 64. They sell Patriot headers and have a block hugger style #PTE-H8019 angle plug D-port in ceramic coating for $265. These are very nice headers, 16 ga. with a true 3/8 flange........worth a look.
Watch out for Patroit---- Had this exact set, that a customer supplied, upon fire up the so call Armor Coat burned off in 5 minutes
Pure Junk!!!! :nono: :nono:

you can get the heddman "tight tubes" hugger header from Pace Performance that are ported for the d-port just for pace. I have them on my 37 coupe, and bought them uncoated in case I needed to "adjust" a tube. they went on without a hitch, and I had them jet coated at my local powdercoater, they look just as good today as the day I bought them. I bought the summit brand copper collector gaskets, and have had no leaks. I also used the felpro exhaust gasket on the head surface with a small coating on both sides of high temp copper permatex-again, no leaks for 4+ years, and these headers have a flat tube design, allowing great room for steering shafts, and good plug access. IMHO :D

streetrodderbn.........Patriot headers are not "junk", they have a metalic ceramic thermal coating just like all the rest of the coated headers. If people would read the instructions ...it says DO NOT use the headers on a newly built engine until it is broken in and tuned properly. My Sandersons said the same thing.

I posted JUNK
The engine had been run in with an old set of headers and had over 2 hrs on it and it was properly tuned.
Been @ this game for over 40 years and have tuned more than 1 engine in my life time
Still say they are JUNK!!!!
Anybody want to buy a set of headers??????????????
Bought Sandersons and they still look good after 2500 miles.

Almost sounds like some customer-applied finish on Patriot's uncoated headers.

Their ceramic finish- even if misapplied- would have lasted much longer than that, at least in places.

FWIW, when ceramicoat/HTC was "new", I watched a new set of headers heat up on a Pontiac 400. At first, just a ghost but as the heat increased a full palm w/4 fingers appeared across two pipes on the driver's side.

Dude was BUMMED. AFAIK, he never did send them back. I know I would have... :spank:

My only experience with Patriots is on long tube block-huggers for a narrow chassis car. The headers look great, but the hole spacing where they attach to the cylinder head was off a bit on one of the pair. Needed to open the hole a bit with a die grinder. And, Cobalt327, even recently I've bought headers that instruct the buyer to clean thoroughly before engine start-up to avoid hand and finger prints. Have you bought headers that didn't caution about this? If so, did you test them?
