72 Nova Dash Pad

I’m not building a show car. This build is really more of a street/strip car that leans more towards minimalistic aesthetically and higher on the performance spectrum.

I recently had to do some pretty intensive work on my dash/cowl area to fix rot. I removed the dash pad to do the work. The pad was covered with a piece of vinyl and looked decent and maybe I should have just left it alone but I didn’t.

I took the cover off to expose the 50 year old cracked OEM deal and rather than stop there and do some research, I pulled all of it off.

Now i’ve got a bare metal frame. I don’t really need a pad, I don’t think it does a whole lot to protect anyone but it does cover a rather unsightly metal dash.

Seeking ideas on what I can do from here. I was thinking of covering it with fiberglass cloth and then maybe some CF or something. I’m just checking in here for experiences and ideas from people who deal with this sort of stuff regularly.

thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge with me

You have to keep your eye on the ball.. fiberglass and carbon fiber is expensive. You’ll spend more doing that than buying the $400 dash pad.

Fwiw your way will work, but fiberglass and metal expand at a different rate which will be 1000 times worse next to the windshield on a hot day. Since its interior and fiberglass can hold its own shape you may never notice but it might show…. A better idea is to build your dash pad on top with a release agent so that you can take it off, finish it and have the metal and glass 2 separate parts.

Look into Just Dashes recovering your existing pad frame.

What about the Urethane replacement, just $280??
Carbon fiber and fiberglass materials along with paint is going to get you close to that expense already.
I've used the Urethane deal in a '74 Camaro....doesn't look completely stock but does look presentable. I'd consider it fantastic looking for a race car.
