I had aamco rebuild this transmission 1.5 yrs ago, it has failed 4 times with last Friday being the 4th time. The first time the sunshell failed, then 3 months later it wouldn't shift all gears, I was told it was the servo that was junked up from the sunshell failure. July this year the tranny failed again. They told me that the last two repairs were just a band aid and they were going to rebuild it completely, well it failed again and i lost 3rd and overdrive. I originally had 224,000 on my suburban with the factory tranny , even though I never had trouble with it. I was installing a new engine and had aamco rebuild it just for peace of mind.I am on a trip right now and am stuck in Tallahasse at a motel and the local aamco wants to charge for a complete rebuild. I was 1100 miles over warranty. I have heard of Monster trannys and
PATC transmissions. Is there any advice you can give as what is the best way to go? It costs me car rental and motel expenses everytime this trans fails, plus I have to worry about my tool trailer being left on the interstate. Not to mention the loss of work and income.
If I go with one of the other transmission companies what transmission upgrade should I get? I do tow my boat or my trailer.

if u do a lot of traveling go with a gm reman or jasper there not hd rebuilds just stock but willl warrenty there work nation wide patc seems like a good tranny i never used one of theres or heard anyone use them monster i heard good and bad

Thanks for the reply, I am going to aamco this morning and get my truck back, unless the main office honors the warranty. If they do I hope the tranny makes it to Maryland where I will be for a month to two months. That way I have time to find someone that can build it right.
Thanks again. Jeramiah

Neither PATC or Monster are very reputable. I've redid MANY of both, and I've heard horror stories about both of them doing everything they can to get out of their warranties. Aamco is basically a "parts swapping" operation. The majority of their "builders" are only half trained. They fix what the immediate problem is, but do no updates. We've had ex Aamco "builders" come to work at 2 of the shops that I've worked at that lasted about a week. The simple fact that they didn't upgrade to a "Beast" sun shell, proves they're half assing things. Most big transmission chains are nothing more than a rip off. Most times, you're better off going to a small, privately owned shop.

What has happened to an honest days work? You can still make money doing it right the first time.

Where areyou at?

I am heading to the east coast (Maryland) as soon as I get my truck back. The aamco transmission mechanic told me to take my transmission to Nationwide in Tallahasse, he said they are honest and do good work, plus they tell youy up front how much it will cost. I took it to them this Morning and are hoping for the best. By the way the manager at aamco in Tallahasse told the guys to start removing my tranny as soon as I left after i told them not to touch it until I talked to the aamco main office to try to get it done under warranty. The customer care office has a recording and you are supposed to leave your number and they will get back to you in 24 hrs. I got back to the aamco transmission shop and they were getting ready to remove the tranny after having drained the fluid and removing the drive shafts. I had them put everything back causing the manager to get pissed and leave for the day.
Going to nationwide trans. saved me 1600.00 since aamco was going to charge me around 3200. for the work. At least they had an honest mechanic.

The manager at aamco had taken a quilt out of my truck and used it to spend the night at the shop since he was fighting with his wife. I didn't know that at the time. When I got my truck back the was gone and the secretary found it in a back room on the floor. WHAT A ZOO.

This is INSANE. I feel so bad for people who lose a daily driver tranny, because they usually have no idea what to do on short notice. Usually you do not have time to shop around and you never know if the guy who you take your trans to, may just drop it off at Aamco or TransMedic. Im so sorry this happened to you, as a smaller 'boutique' shop, we make our money on repeat business; charging the guy 8x the price and doing shoddy work just means I'll never see his business again. Im glad you got an honest shop recommendation. Good Luck and keep us posted. BTW; I don't know how you kept your s--- together when someone took your personal effects out of the vehicle. I woulda lost my mind.

I am going to raise hell with aamco and their corporate office when I get back home, i just might start raising hell before I get home. I should have let my dog handle the quilt problem it is her's anyway, It's too bad she didn't have fleas that would have been poetic justice.

I'm usually a fan of taking it back to the place that did the job the first time ... but this sounds like a horror story of epic proportions!

Please DO contact "Double A - Beep, Beep, M-C-O" head office and tell them your story.

Some of these shops seem to think they can get away with murder just because they hold a franchise ... relying on "name brand" familiarity / loyalty.

Being in the auto parts biz gives me a bit of insight when it comes to repair shops in general. I wouldn't dream of taking my car to any shop that buys (or wants to buy) the "cheap stuff" on a regular basis.

They often tell me "But that is what the customers want!"

Really?
Then why, 90% of the time, when WE provide cutomers with an option ... do they respond with "Yes, give me the better one" ???

Your wasting your time with AMMCO on top of your money. put in a box and ship it:

These arn't particularly cheap but by now cheap has taken on a new meaning for you. As you found out an automatic simply can't be rebuilt from the old parts mixed with swapped parts. Everybody's automatic has weak spots and peculiarities that have to be addressed. There's a large numbers of engineering improvements to be put into these older transmissions. Fixing automatics has always been expensive.

The 4L60e sun-gear failure is a know problem. GM updated the sun-gear to eliminate this failure.

If your under warranty with Amoco get it fixed.

GM has the best transmission replacement with a 3 yr 100k warranty. Most are 100% virgin new.

The transmission will have all updates and will be application correct.

Transmission shops like Amoco only fix whats broke in the trans. It's a know fact in the transmission world.

Call around and price the trans from dealer to dealer. Also your favorite garage can purchase the trans and install and save you money. The GM power train program for installers is a awesome deal.

The garage need to purchase form a GM power-train dealer, not all dealers are power-train direct level 1/2 dealers.

If you need more help with this, Pm me and I will give you my number to help you find a dealer in your location.

Have a warranty that is nationwide with any GM dealer. And the dealers love the program, they get paid to do the repair.

aamco

i would'nt let aamco work on my bicycle.back in 1985 in phoenix arizona,i needed a turbo 350 rebuilt.fortunately i met an owner of an independent shop who told me aamco was going around to all of the independents and buying up or were just given, barrels of discarded steels, clutches etc and rebuilding replacement trans, when an unsuspecting customer needed a trans, they just pulled one off the shelf and bingo.they figured that a 6 month,12000 mile warranty would last.there were up to 5 aamco shops, busted by the state and the feds in the phoenix area alone.you might find the info if you google it.but the kicker, this independent did my car and the torque converter was shot.i got rid of the car.the new owner was going to put a muncie 4 speed into it.go with tci and pay a well respected mech, there are some out there to install it.or b/m.i bought a turbo 400 from kragen, same as checker,i believe and the first lasted 5000 miles.the second went at 2200 and the third i had a local shop redo it and i was told the foward clutches were where the directs were susposed to go.i called the co.that did all of the transmissions for this chain and all i got was jerk it out and send it back @ $240 each time for labor.anyway long to short the trans had 2 year 24 month unlimited milege, but the idiots doing the work were not even apprentice grade and quality control was almost nonexistant.the tranny the local guy built for me has been trouble free for almost 8 years.you throw the dice and close your eyes.or build them your self.

ya know its a real shame that theres not any pride in people anymore but, there are still some of us who care about the product that we produce. im a 2nd generation trans tech and my father opened doors in 1965 and was at it till 2004 when he got ill and was told for health reasons to get out of the business. i can tell you with all honesty that my dad had one of the best reputations in tucson for the work he did. through the years, on average, i hardly ever saw any comebacks and even if by chance the trans failed and they were out of warranty, he would still fix it as a good word of mouth was worth more than to re-charge a customer to redo the trans again and possibly loose their business.
this field isnt for everyone, and you can say oh, just build it yourself and, you know what? over 80% of the people that i have met who decided that they could do it wind up at our front door to get it right when they couldnt.
i happily welcome anyone to try it for themselves just for the experience, then they will see what im talking about.
