Best Spark Plug Wires??

I have discovered some bad plug wires on my 1969 350 Chevy with stock exhaust manifolds. I drive the car on the street with no racing, but I would like a quality wire that will last a long time and still permit me to play the radio without static. I am going to replace the wires but there are so many to choose from, I don't know which brand is best for the money. Can anyone tell me about their experience with plug wires? Good and bad??

I'm using 8mm Accel Super Stock suppression core custom fit wires. I like the look, they work great, no radio noise, and they're pre-cut to fit your application. Two wire sets that we have had excellent luck with on the dyno are Taylor 409's and MSD 8.5's. Both have excellent coverings that can withstand high heat conditions without shorting. Plug boot size though on both sets can be a problem though with some manifold setups that are very close to the plugs so routing is very important.

Well, first off they are illegal on street driven cars, and have been since 1955, by FCC regulation. In the second place, they will burn up most electronic ignitions in short order, by RFI interference. And third, with the coils we use today, even with point ignitions, they aren't really effective.

Also, the pulsing current through them sets up magnetic fields, vibrates the wire strands and they fail internally. All-in-all not good for the street. For my money any good name brand wire is fine (Accel, Taylor, MSD, etc.), I prefer Accel 'cause I love yellow! The absolute best of both worlds - max current and max radio suppression - is offered by the spiral wrapped core. Those have a fiberglass carbon core like suppressor wires for maximum tensile strength that is wrapped with fine stainless steel strand that has little resistance. Here is one example but they all make them.

I chose MSD Heli-Core wires mainly because the blue matched up with my motor really well and the dist. end boots fit real good under the Accel HEI Super Coil top hat. It sounds like Jmark is still running a stock GM HEI distributor wire retainer setup. Most high perfomance wire sets dont come with mushroom heads on the distributor end boot because most all of the aftermarket stuff no longer uses 'em.
I've had the MSD wires on the 53 for five years now, and haven't had a lick of trouble with them. Even as close as they are to the headers, they still haven't started getting brittle yet or broke down under the heat.
I started out with a spendy cut-to-fit set of 12MM wires that came with a crimper to do the the terminal ends with. After a half a tube of dielectric grease and cussing up a storm trying to get the angle boots slid down over wires I went with the taylor-made set of MSD's.

Based on my experience with several brands...... spiral core wires wipe out your weaker signal AM radio listening, and occasionally some FM too.

Accel yellow carbon core wires will cross fire from something like a DUI coil/distributor.

Carbon core wires are the best if you have any radio concerns. If you have a hot ignition, forget the fancy radio stuff, it ain't gonna happen.

I used MSD 8.5MM wire when I made the wires set for my white caprice, I get some serious radio station interferance, but I have my ipod tied into the head unit so I don't care.

nobody ever claimed the government makes GOOD laws.

Have you ever been in traffic and had a hot rod with copper wires pull up near you and HE blew out YOUR radio with "spark plug" noise, or had one drive past your house and make popping noise in your TV??? That's the reason the gov did it.

Does anybody remember the Renault Fuego (saw one yesterday)???? One magazine was testing them when they first came out (82?) and during a lightning storm every flash shut the engine off. Later they discovered that hotrods with copper wires also shut the engine off.... But is was a Renault.

The copper wires will cause major static on your neighbors' radios & TV's, and once they figure out what's causing it, you might be in for some trouble. They will not increase performance a bit on a reasonable street engine. I've had good luck with the spiral-core Borg-Warner wires from Pep Boys (~$35 for a V8).
