Hello my name is Kevin I am the proud owner of a 1970 1/2 comaro with a 12 sec 355. I wore a cam lobe on a long cruise in the fall and am currently thinking of purchasing a blueprint 420 hp 383 and was wondering if anyone knows if this will be a good purchase?

use an oil additive with a flat tappet cam.

Yes, if a cam lobe goes flat. It typically eats all the engine bearings. The engine should be pulled out and disassembled, cleaned, and new bearings installed. The crank may also need some machine work.

look for a complete 350 factory roller block. 1996 to 99 350 vortec truck engine would be a good engine to start with.

You will have the same problem. Find one with a roller cam, they don't go flat.
That's a big blanket opinion, stuff happens, but it's not an every day occurrence. Rollers are nice but not a requirement for longevity.

Whether or not that 383 is a good purchase depends on what you're looking for and the cost.

Buyer be aware

Well I would strongly urge you to steer clear of Blue print engines. I purchased the 38302CT which was the 383 performance TBI. First engine started smoking and going through about a 1 qt of oil every 400 miles. They surprisingly warranteed that engine but said it was a few valvestem seals that popped off the guide and that was causing the oil consumption, i noticed exhaust ports were blasted and saturated with oil. Next engine went about 1100 miles and started doing the same thing, so saw once again that 3 valve seals had done the same thing, after they assured me they had the issue resolved. I pulled all the seals and used Comp Cam Teflon seals on all of them. That did no good I then went through them again and noticed I had 4 valves that I could move by hand loose in the guide. I started another claim and sent the heads back. They said everything was in tolerance and kept my heads. I was so pissed I ordered some Trick Flow Heads and a new Comp Cam 12-365-4 and never looked back and got about 15 more hp than those junk World Sportsman II heads. The techs are not very savvy about much of anything and all the good ones have quit and went elsewhere. Also I wish I would have took pictures of what a lowsy job they did clearancing the piston skirts. Left a bunch of gouged up edges and stress points on them. The best advice I can give you is go local, heck you can now buy a 383 96-2000 block that is ready for roller cam from summit, then have a local builder do the rest so that if you have problems they can stand behind it.

Good advice IMO. It's tempting to shop around for the best deal (which usually means you're buying from somewhere miles away), but if anything goes wrong, you're faced with shipping parts back and forth, you could face unreturned phone calls and just a world of hassle. Much better to pay the extra for someone local to do any machining/building work, so you can easily drive over there in person if there are any issues.

PS. I wonder if the prices of the cheaper engine builders go up if they see you're in the local area?! :D

For flat tappet cams you need as much zinc in ur oil as possible IMO Amzoil is the ONLY oil to buy, they make a high zinc formula just for flat tappet cams most people think Amzoil cost alot but its actually cheaper than over the counter oils. Its not hard to find a local dealer or just order it strait from Amzoil. I put Amzoil in everything from motocross bikes to my lawnmower!! Anyone that says different has not done research. Just my two cents.

Well here comes the cold water...splish splash. :smash:

I just ran 12,000 + miles last year and 1,500 the year before. Many 3-4 hour trips and dozens of 'caught in the traffic' hot afternoon trips all with a flat tappet hyd cam. Hours of idling at "Back to the 50's". To top it off I trashed a set of lifters on this cam early on due to being too lazy to properly adjust them. So if a cam was to be abused this was it. So far it looks good.

I do run lots of additive and high vol, high pressure pump...against all recommendations.. . There is a reason. I like lots of oil spraying all over especially on the cam and I like lots of oil pressure at low engine speed when I jump the throttle and get nearly full boost instantly.

Right on Wings. I've said it all along, listen to the ones who've been there, done that, the good, bad and the ugly.

BTW, I just had a visitor from cities for a week, nice break for her, we're into summer here now.

It's supposed to be 53 and sunny tomorrow so I'm planning on going for the opening cruise to somewhere. I could have gone today but the shop driveway was a sea of mud. It looks like most of the silt and salt have washed down the hill so I think I can get out with a minimum of mess in the early afternoon. Can't wait. :D
