These units are very sensative to voltage spikes from a "loose" alternator. Mallory has a fix for it.

 

What is the fix? I've been reading some online blogs that say it is mandatory to run the ballast resistor (Mallory #MAL-700) or this will continue?

They sell a "spike guard" that fits in the ign wire to the resistor.

Years ago I got to spend a "my expense paid" weekend in St Ignas, Mi. Because a Delco alternator "spiked" my Unilite. No parts in available Upper Michigan.

 

You definitely need the ballast resistor with the Mallory coil.

Is the Unilite module connected to the coil ignition wiring?
Are you running solid core spark plug wires?

 

U running an ext or int regulator? Mine kept burning up modules untill I swapped the ext regulator for a internal Alt/regulator, been running good so far

I will get a ballast resistor. Unilite is wired to the Mallory promaster coil via the 3 wire pigtail. Not sure on the wires? Will they say on them?

The spike filter will also help with the External voltage regulator.

You can check Mallorys site or go to Summit's site & they have Pdf. intructions for wiring. Just look up a Mallory Coil or Distributor & you'll see the link.

 

Do'in the alt swap was possibly the best thing I have done for my car. It's super simple....... basicly jumping the existing wires coming off the external regulator and adding a wire from the radiator support splice/stud back across the radiator support to the external reg area.

The best thing is no more dim lights!
