I had the same bug on by '89 IROC. My problem was that the wires going to the reader in the key switch for the passkey broke because the movement of the column every time I got in and out. If you look at the key the little bump near the base of the key is actually a resistor built into the key. You can either open up the column and repair the wire (mine didn't stay fixed long) or read the resistance of the key with an ohm meter and find the wires going into the column and cut and insert a resistance of the same value as the key to bypass it. Mine ran that way until I sold it.

 

Try cleaning the key and a small shot of WD40 in the lock Cly.

 

I had the same problem and fixed it the same way that shortstep did. Just get a multimeter and get the resistance. Radio shack sells the 8 common resistors that it can be. It cost me like 0.28 to fix the problem instead of replacing the ignition cylinder. On my monte carlo it was the orange wire with 2 wires inside it. Its pretty easy to figure out which one it is since it is the only signal wire coming from the steering wire I believe.

I have the exact same car with the exact same problem. I have not try'd it yet but plan to. I have found out through hours of searching that in your key you have a resitor. If you take an ohm meter reading on the key, if it is like mine it will have .510 K ohm resistance. To make a long story short under the steering column there is a connector for the lock cylinder, I am not sure were the lock cylinder is but if you unplug it and install the resistor across the end that goes to the car wiring harness. It is supposed to fix this problem. If you find out something else, I wish you would let me know.

They are called VATS Keys

There are 15 different resistors, dealer or locksmith have keyreaders that can determine which one you have....personally I'm going to bomb the switch in my corvette doing the same thing with contact cleaner (none plastic eating tupe)
