Dohhhhh, buffing the gelcoat?

 

That's interesting BOBCRMAN. I was eyeing my wool schlegel pad and thinking of trying it using Sof-Scrub. BarKeepers friend sounds like a good idea also. Maybe I'll go that route...

 

Back in the early eighties I lived at a place where the iron content in the water was VERY high. A glass of water looked like tea. You had to take a piece of hanger wire and clean the little holes around the underside of the toilet bowl once a month so it would flush. And heaven help the guy who let a faucet drip! The rust would be at least 1/32" thick in a few hours.

I use a Schlegle Wool pad and Barkeepers Friend mixed with Lacquer rubbing compound on my 7" buffer to clean the plastic (fiberglass) tub/shower.

Be VERY careful with Scotchbrite on plastic, or you will be thru the finish quickly.

 

Thanks Ron. I've been thinking of getting the sheets and cut them into circles for this purpose. Sounds like a plan!

 

Sounds to me that you are looking for either blue or gray - fine or ultra fine scotchbrite. If you have or find a hook and loop backing, they will work well for polishing and cleaning. I use the ultrfine gray on my bathtub with water, and it works great.

 

Tha pads I've seen are all for stripping paint or scuffing steel. The pads I'm looking for would be for cleaning. They make them on hand-scrubbers, and B&D has pricey ones specially made for their scum-buster. What I'm looking for are generic cleaning-grade pads that I could use on my buffer.

No I am not painting the tub! This is a "plastic" tub..

 

I believe they have them at the hardware store. They make a tool for prepping hardwood floors that uses a similar pad, maybe that too would be an option.

Do you plan on painting that tub? If you do, get a motel for at LEAST a few days, I mean three or four. If you plan on using auto paint that is. The fumes from the flashing solvents will KILL YOU, even a few days later!
